Wolfsburg wins tournament in Norway

VfL Wolfsburg from Germany won the Final of the Budstikka International Women's Cup on Sunday morning by beating Arsenal 6-1 at the Telenor Arena in Oslo, with goals by Anna Blässe (20), Martina Müller (36, 85, 88), Rebecca Smith (55) and Ivonne Hartmann (77).

The Germans opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Müller sent Blässe through the centre.  Then after 35 minutes Blässe sent in a cross from the right, and Müller was left with a tap-in for 2-0.  Rebecca Smith took the third goal in the 55th minute, but after another five minutes Arsenal took a goal back.

A penalty conceded by Arsenal's keeper gave Wolfsburg goal no. 4, executed by Ivonne Hartmann, before 5-1 came up from Müller after 85 minutes.  Only three minutes later Müller scored from another penalty to bring the final score to 6-1.

Trainer Ralf Kellermann was pleased: "Arsenal was better in the first 20 minutes, but then we dominated up to half time.  In the second half Arsenal were better, but only for 15 minutes.  With the fourth goal the contest was over.  We played good technical football at a high speed, and I am very happy with the whole weekend in Oslo".

Goals: 1-0 Blässe (20), 2-0 Müller (36), 3-0 Smith (55), 3-1 (60), 4-1 Hartmann (77 pen.), 5-1 Müller (85), 6-1 Müller (88 pen.)

VfL:
Souza –
Chandraratne (87 Marxkord), Smith, Omilade, Bunte (63 Faißt)  –
Blässe (46 Jakabfi), Hartmann, Rantanen (46 Wilkens), Larsen-Kaurin (72 Ende) –
Wagner (46 Moser), Müller.

Champions League triumph for Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg beat Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League Final in London last night, their first win in the top European club competition.  The losing finalists Lyon had lost the 2010 final and won the competition in 2011 and 2012, and had come to Wembley as the big favourites, but last night it didn't help.  Martina Müller's penalty after 73 minutes gave Wolfsburg the win following a handball by Laura Georges.

Wolfsburg packed the midfield, pressed hard and kept the French team's midfielders from establishing their game.  They are the German Bundesliga champions and won the German Cup Final last Sunday.  They become the fourth German team to win the Champions League, after Turbine Potsdam, Duisburg and Frankfurt, and they have won it at the first attempt.

Yesterday's showdown in the Frauen-Bundesliga started with Wolfsburg (54 points), Bayern (53) and Frankfurt (52) all hoping to win the title.  Frankfurt and Wolfsburg met in Frankfurt, while Bayern Munich were at home to Essen.

The Frankfurt-Wolfsburg match ended in a 1-1 draw.  Frankfurt took an early lead with a goal by Verónica Boquete.  Martina Müller equalised in the second half with a last goal of the season for her.

In Munich Melanie Leupolz scored first after five minutes and 19-year-old Vivianne Miedema from the Netherlands scored a second goal after half an hour.

Bayern Munich took the title with 56 points while Wolfsburg finished with 55.  Frankfurt with 53 were in third place and Turbine Potsdam were fourth with 48.  There is a twenty-point gap down to Essen who had 28 points and finished fifth.

FFC Frankfurt beat Paris St Germain 2-1 in the Final.  PSG's Fatmire Alushi played in the Final but will not be in Germany's World Cup squad because she is expecting her first child.
