Title: WPL/Div 1, 2017/18 - FA Women's Premier League/Div 1
Post by: sbahnhof on June 24, 2017, 12:07:35 PM
(Continuing from the end of the 2016/17 season (http://www.womensfootball.eu/forum/index.php/topic,8311.0.html).)

Tiers 3 and 4 of English women's football. Here are the divisions for 2017/18:

(https://s26.postimg.org/4lj5d9azt/FAWPL-2017-2018.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ph5foi76t/)

A few changes since last season – Tottenham go up to WSL 2! Newcastle relegated! QPR saved (http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/qpr-ladies-qpr-fa-womens-premier-league-relegation-3729050.aspx)! Stevenage and Rotherham (https://www.themillers.co.uk/news/2017/june/read--leggitt-calls-on-ladies-to-take-charge-as-club-are-reinstated-to-fawpl/) reinstated!

During the season there's more information on the WPL Tweeter (https://twitter.com/FA_WPL) and videos on FAWPL.tv (http://fawpl.tv/).

Also saw a very happy post from Rotherham United saying that they had been reprieved to remain in FAWPL Division One Midlands, having finished second to last.

Still waiting to hear if Yeovil Town Intermediate will be allowed in FAWPL Division One South West. I've heard two versions ......

http://rotherhamunitedlad.wixsite.com/rulfc/single-post/2017/06/05/An-Amazing-Twist-of-Fate (http://rotherhamunitedlad.wixsite.com/rulfc/single-post/2017/06/05/An-Amazing-Twist-of-Fate)

So, the top 2 in the SWWFL (http://full-time.thefa.com/ProcessPublicSelect.do?psSelectedSeason=70104629&psSelectedDivision=275788984&psSelectedLeague=49427966) weren't promoted to tier 4 - Yeovil Intermediate (http://www.yeoviltownladiesfc.co.uk/intermediate-team) and Marine Academy Plymouth (http://www.marineacademy.org.uk/community/marine-academy-football-club). Instead it's 3rd-placed Poole who enter Division 1 SW. The FA has said Yeovil aren't allowed to play in WPL because they're a reserve team, but what about Marine Academy?

Two teams to watch for in this season's Northern Division 1 - both from Yorkshire, and both bolstered by their clubs:

Sheffield United won promotion last season, part of a winning women's division all round. With extra backing from Bramall Lane, general manager Lee Walshaw needs the team to repeat that achievement:

- http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-ladies-prove-they-mean-business-at-bramall-lane-1-8618145 (http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-ladies-prove-they-mean-business-at-bramall-lane-1-8618145)

Quote
Kevin McCabe, United’s co-owner ... “He’s set us a target of being in the Women’s Super League in five years time so that’s another two promotions. We’ve bought ourselves a bit of time by getting the first of three in the first season. It’s going to be tough but I think it’s achievable.”
(The Star, Sheffield) (http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-ladies-prove-they-mean-business-at-bramall-lane-1-8618145)

In Leeds, the women's team gets to have another name change, whoopee... But this time they'll return to being Leeds United Ladies and will be recognized by LUFC. Fans familiar with Leeds can probably tell us – is it the owners' genuine heartfelt wish, or opportunism? Or both?

Blackburn will be favourites to retain the WPL North title, having fallen to Tottenham in the 2017 playoff final (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40072350).

Rovers announced their preseason here, a chance to gauge their progress against higher-division teams:

Bolton's new signings -

"At 21, Safron Newhouse is the oldest of the new additions, which also include Millie Critchley, Olivia Hooper, Nicole Malpus, Amily Hockenhull and Gemma Yeldrem." (http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wanderers/15391419.Wanderers_Ladies_land_six_of_the_best/)

Bolton are in Northern Division 1 - slight error in the article. They came up from the North West Regional League, which they won in 2016/17 (https://www.bwfc.co.uk/news/2017/april/bolton-wanderers-ladies-secure-north-west-premier-league-title-and-promotion/).

Chloé Brunton-Wilde talks about why she joined Charlton for their upcoming season in WPL South - and why she left neighbours Arsenal.

All the friendlies currently known are listed here:

- http://shekicks.net/tag/pre-season-friendlies/ (http://shekicks.net/tag/pre-season-friendlies/)

It's a huge number, including non-WPL, and the list runs up to September 17. Tonight (Wednesday) will be Leeds United's first game post-takeover, away at Huddersfield Town (https://throughitalltogether.sbnation.com/2017/7/12/15957112/friendly-match-preview-leeds-united-ladies-v-huddersfield-town-ladies-fa-womens-cup).

One to watch at Charlton - with 2 goals per game in the girls' county league, it's Goal Getter Griffin! How did her parents know to name her that?

Poole Town will face maybe the toughest task of all Division 1 teams on the pitch, battling in the South-West (mentioned in the OP).

And maybe you didn't expect it, but Portsmouth are the virtual European champions of beach football! (Well, 4 of the England XI.)

It's England's best result since 1966 imo.

I think Leicester CWFC will give the WPL North a run for their money. They have strengthened from last year, acquired most of the departing RTC1 youngsters (only team to beat an Arsenal u16/u17s team in over 4 years) so,re a good squad last year..... be interesting to see how the season pans out for them .... they've also acquired a number of sound players from surrounding wpl clubs, see their twitter account?

There's another truckload of friendlies this weekend on Sun 13 Aug. Involving WPL clubs up and down the country, including Blackburn's visit to Sheffield FC:

Also, Derby County need a minibus (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Minibussen.jpg) Can you help?

The main thing we learn is that the club doesn't help its women's team financially:

Sorry to hear about the passing of Mary Rudkin, who was a football ambassador as a player, coach and behind the scenes. She was also active in the development of blind football (http://web.archive.org/web/20170819034736/http://www.midlandsbusinessnews.co.uk/Leicestershire-to-excel-in-Blind-Football/) in Leicestershire. Tributes were paid by Leicester City Ladies this week.

Season kickoff was yesterday in WPL Northern/Southern, and the Division 1 regions. Videos still to come, if any show up.

Free match at Elland Road Sunday 2pm, Leeds Utd v Chester Le Street.

It's Leeds Ladies' first match since reuniting with the club:

Chester-le-Street Town Ladies travelled to play Leeds Ladies at Elland Road. Leeds won 1 nil but it was a great experience for the Cestrians

Sounds like a good occasion - the most-viewed match of the weekend in level 3 or 4.

Thanks for posting the photos, NSmith, a fantastic record of the day.

You may want to post in this thread for future Chester-le-Street games – your links might be seen more, as the thread will stay visible on the homepage later. I'm finding it's usually best to have one main thread for each section. Especially for sections like this, which get few posts as it is.
