Title: England's Euro squad announcement...when and where
Post by: pat51 on June 06, 2013, 06:48:28 PM
The England squad announcement for the UEFA Championship Finals will take place at the British Museum on June 17.

The high profile media event will take place at one of the most iconic buildings in England to signal the start of a major awareness campaign in the run up to the UEFA European Championships in Sweden from 10-28 July.

The British Museum...why not ?

Awkward when you name a player in your squad who hasn't played a minute of football this season and miss out two of the highest scorers in the league...

Bronze instead of Harrop and  Moore instead of Rachel Williams the 2 "surprises" for me. The rest was expected really.

Bronze may be a concern re injury management. Probably wont play as much though.

If Steph has a problem well Lucy will get a game unless they move Stoney to left back.

5 injured players is a lot. It could be trouble.

Hope might not be everyone's favourite, but she has achieved a lot.  England are up to 7th ranked in the world (only one place of their highest ever ranking) and are ranked 4th highest in Europe behind only Germany, France and Sweden.

Hope has picked an experienced squad, although injuries are a worry.  I have heard personally that Steph will be okay and Casey will apparently be back in training next week. That leaves Carney (no matches this season), Smith (1 game this season) and Brown who will hopefully recover from their injuries.

With Rafferty and Unit out, I fully praise the decision to pick Lucy Bronze.  She has been the outstanding English full-back in the WSL this season and she can play left back or central defender, as well as her usual right back decision.  I have been told by a mutual friend, that she is completely over her previous injuries and has been firing on all cylinders this season.  I have watched her 3 times this season and can vouch for her.  Gemma Bonner has been outstanding as well.

As an Arsenal fan, I a little disappointed to see Gilly Flaherty left out.  Hopefully, she will be first reserve ahead of Harrop if Casey fails to recover (although Harrop is good).  I also hope that Gemma Davison is first reserve if Carney fails a fitness test (although I suspect Potter would get called up).  Potter is a good player, and she was unlucky to lose out to Jade Moore, but I am a big Davison fan.  If Kelly Smith fails a fitness test, I would love to see Natasha Dowie (Tats) called up.  I knew her dad and she used to coach my daughter.  However, Hope might unfortunately opt for Rachel Williams in those circumstances (wrongly I think).

All in all, I think the squad if just about spot on if players recover from injuries. I would love to see appearance from Dowie, Davison, Potter and Flaherty next season though, although experience will tell in the Euros.  I would predict a semi-final place, and I wouldn't be surprised if we made the final if we can avoid Germany and France.  Remember we have beaten Canada twice, beaten Italy and drawn with France (unlucky not to beat the) during the last year.  Good luck to both Jordan Nobbs and Lucy Bronze.

Indeed Potter is on the forgotten list with many many players.
Those who won't be considered regardless of their performances.

That's really the strangest thing, there are 180 players in the FA WSL but a few English abroad, Asante, Taylor, Sanderson and around 50/60 are good enough but she will restrict herself to about 30-35 potential players.

Well with Jade Moore and Potter both being midfield, by pure mathematics if Moore had been left out there could have been a place for POTTER LOL

Well dont agree with some of the decisions, but i guess if you put 100 people in a room there would be 100 different opinions.  All done and dusted now so only one thing to say really:

Come on England!  :)

We'll have to agree to differ then as Rachael Williams is a forward and Jade Moore is a midfielder. Hope always has 4 forwards in a squad, so I stick with my logic that Jo Potter would have been picked if Moore wasn't.  The logic of saying Moore took Williams place is like going out to dinner and saying I can't decide whether to have the Chicken Curry or the Black Forest Gateaux as my main course lol

We'll have to agree to differ then
.   According to that logic, ,Joe potter would be on stand by. And she is not
. She hasn't been considered for a position since she last played for england. She is a great player and should throw her hat in the ring, if she would then she could be picked.

According to that logic, ,Joe potter would be on stand by. And she is not.

Is it common knowledge who the nearly players are?

To be honest I'm struggling to come up with another 17 names, (players of suitable quality) who aren't in Hope Powell's bad books

Title: Re: England's Euro squad announcement...when and where
Post by: Sylvain on June 20, 2013, 07:55:41 PM
Well the latest U23 list has more or less the remaining 17 players.
I think what is common knowledge is those blacklisted by Powell.
Title: Re: England's Euro squad announcement...when and where

I still say think that Jo Potter deserves a place in this England squad and I would have picked her instead of Jade Moore.  She has been the outstanding Birmingham player in both matches against Arsenal this season (more so than Jade Moore). Potter hassles players on the ball and has a great shot. Apparently, bilbobaggins knows she isn't one of the standby players, even though I don't think the standby players have been announced.

Apparently bilbobaggins has a favorite player. Its Josanne potter. And I would love her to play for england. It would be like a Chinese curry compared to a chip.

Does that choice have anything to do with Powell?

Well if it were true that Jo Potter had chosen not to play for England, someone forget to tell her club manager, as he's been pushing her for inclusion in the England Euro squad in 2 recent interviews, one of which can be found on the BBC website.

Still don't get why Gilly Flaherty isn't even in the U23 squad.  The selectors have lost the plot.  Despite her height she's good in the air and even better on the ground. Selectors gone mad.

Either they don't like her at the FA or she has retired from selection...
I bet they don't like her.

Well the latest U23 list has more or less the remaining 17 players.

Virtually every Arsenal game Gemma Davison starts and Danielle Carter is warming the bench. Come the Euro’s, Danielle’s potentially in the national squad (maybe even having to play) and Gemma is at home watching the game on the telly – Something not quite right there.

my opinion only ,Gilly Flaherty should have been chosen, perhaps there a reason other than personal  like/dislike but i doubt it.
i certainly think she has better controlled aggression than a couple of other players that i wont mention.
Title: Re: England's Euro squad announcement...when and where
Post by: JP47 on June 22, 2013, 12:07:06 PM
I spoke to Gilly Flaherty after the recent Arsenal vs Chelsea game and she definitely hasn't retired from international football at only 21.  She has ambitions to play for England.  It's the selection process that wrong.  She is even wrong enough for U23's.

As to comments about Gemma Davidson and Danielle Carter, Danielle is a great future prospect, but she is only in the England U23 squad and not the full England squad.  Gemma is too old for the U23's as she is 26 years old, although I would like to see Gemma Davidson break in to the England squad very soon.  She deserves it on this season's form.
Title: Re: England's Euro squad announcement...when and where
Post by: Sylvain on June 22, 2013, 12:29:52 PM
I think she should have been there as well in 2009, her statistics were around 1.2 goals or assist per game that season with 40+ games played.
I am glad Gilly has not retired, so the England coaches don't rate her or and I believe some senior England players don't want her around the squad...
Title: Scott: Squad has right mix
Post by: Sylvain on June 23, 2013, 04:41:23 PM
Jill Scott believes England Women’s Team have the perfect blend of youth and experience

As England get ready for two warm-up matches this week, spirits couldn’t be better throughout the squad ahead of the UEFA European Women's Championship, according to Jill Scott.

The midfielder, who is preparing with her team-mates to face Holland on Monday and then world champions Japan on Wednesday, believes National Coach Hope Powell has got the right blend of players in her line-up for the Finals.

Scott said: “It’s always good to have a good mix of young and more experienced players. The younger players bring that ‘no fear’ attitude.

“They’re raring to go and bring a lot of energy, maybe that us older players don’t have.”

With 65 caps to her name, the Everton star is one of the more experienced members of the squad, but the feeling of playing for her country still fills her with pride.

On her selection, Scott added: “It’s a fantastic honour to be chosen. I just feel a lot of excitement around this squad at the moment.

“I think the girls just want to get out there, start playing football and start winning some games.”

After the behind closed doors training match with the Dutch, the Lionesses will take on Japan at Burton Albion, where they’ll be roared on by 4,000 supporters.

Facing such tough opposition in the build-up to the Euros, which will start for England on Friday12 July versus Spain, will provide the perfect preparation believes Scott.

She said: “We want to play to our best all the time, but especially just before a major tournament because obviously that’s the best preparation, so it’s good that we’ve got these friendlies arranged.

“We played Japan in the World Cup in 2011 and I think the best way to describe them is the 'Barcelona' of the women’s game. They knock the ball around very well and they’ve got lots of very quick players.”

As with any tournament, several nations are in with a shout of glory, but Scott is quietly confident herself.

She said: “We’ve been winning a lot of games – we’ve had the Cyprus Cup in February where we had some really tough matches, such as Canada in the Final.

“They’re one of the best teams around and we beat them 1-0. We played them again in a friendly recently and won again – so I think it’s showing that the squad do really want to win matches and we’re starting to show that now.

"That can only be good going into these European Championship.”

You can watch England Women v Japan live here on TheFA.com from 1.45pm on Wednesday.

There is no England Ladies vs Holland Ladies on Monday.  There is just the Japan game on Wednesday, followed by a friendly vs Sweden, then the Euros.  Apart from that mistake, it is an interesting article.

Well, it is a behind closed door training match so it does not really count. Although the B team will surely play that one as the big game v Japan is so close.

How did you find out about the Holland game because it wasn't mentioned on the England Ladies website that you'd copied the rest of the article off or anywhere else on the net?  Even Jordan Nobbs didn't know anything about it yesterday.

My bet is she will pick someone from the U23 team or Rachel Williams.
But the way things are if Rachel is selected she will be the number 3 center forward behind White and Duggan, so no game time.

Only U23 player that comes anywhere near the seniors attacking mid/forward profile would be Michelle Hinnigan.

But 10/10 times Rachel Williams would get my vote over her.
