You have to like these team names. I wonder who thought of "Alburquerque Lady Asylum" as a team name? Does asylum have the same historical meaning in the US as it does in Britain?  :)

If the women's game in England ever switches to a summer game I wonder if they will "Jazz up" the team names?  ;D

Hope not - I still can't tell my Wigan Wasps from my Wigan Warriors. It's even reached cricket - Kent Spitfires etc. Let's stick with good old Stanley from Accrington and the like!

WOMEN'S PROFESSIONAL SOCCER TO RETURN IN 2008

WPSL connections abound with WSII mission to right the wrongs of the WUSA

SACRAMENTO, CA (04/24/07) - After the Women's Soccer Initiative, Inc.'s initial announcement in February of the return of professional women's soccer to the United States in 2008, WSII CEO Tonya Antonucci released this past week the completion of the proposed eight-team format with the addition of teams in Boston and New York/New Jersey. Two of the eight teams already have connections with the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) while the lead persona herself has spent her share of time in what is currently considered one of the top women's soccer leagues in the world.

"The WPSL is pleased to support the new women's professional league, as we supported the old WUSA," said California Storm owner and WPSL Commissioner Jerry Zanelli. "Tonya brings exceptional leadership and dedication to the new organization. Our teams are preparing current players for the WSII."

Zanelli should know, as Antonucci - the former General Manager of Yahoo! Sports - played in the WPSL with the Storm and later operated a WPSL team out of Palo Alto, CA. More connections abound as Peter Wilt, the G.M. of the 2005 WPSL National Champions in F.C. Indiana, will be one of the partners in the Chicago franchise while Jeff Cooper, owner of the WPSL's River Cities F.C. team that made it to the National Final last season, will be the lead investor in St. Louis.

"This is an important benchmark in the process to bring high-level professional women's soccer back to North America," said Antonucci. "We have taken both the lessons and the successes of the WUSA and applied them to create a business model that makes good economic sense."

"We look forward to working with the Women's Soccer Initiative to build a true grassroots program and to help promote and support the sport of women's soccer," said New England Mutiny owner and WPSL Associate Commissioner Joe Ferrara.

The new league is built on a traditional franchise model and will play its games in stadiums designed specifically for soccer. According to Antonucci, this will give the teams an important head-start, providing opportunities to generate and retain more revenue while better showcasing the sport.

In creating the league, WSII will also build partnerships with established soccer and sports marketing organizations. The league is currently in negotiations with Major League Soccer's marketing arm, Soccer United Marketing, to represent its national sponsorship and marketing assets.

"There's a tremendous upswing in women's collegiate soccer, particularly in our market," said Cooper. "Combined with the coming bump in media coverage and public interest during the FIFA Women's World Cup [being held in China this September], this just makes sense. It's a good proposition for all involved."

The league's planned Chicago franchise is an example of how other teams around the country might be structured. The franchise is a partnership between former Chicago Fire President and General Manager in Wilt, F.C. Indiana and the 15,000-member Illinois Women's Soccer League (IWSL). Included in the group are Gary Weaver and Shek Borkowski, co-owners of F.C. Indiana and other Chicago based investors.

The Chicago partnership announced that IWSL would provide the franchise more than 5,000 season ticket equivalents. The Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG, the primary sponsor of the Los Angeles franchise) and the Village of Bridgeview have partnered with this partnership to bring professional women's soccer to Toyota Park, home of MLS' Chicago Fire.

"The Chicago area is such a strong soccer market and WSII is excited about the opportunity to see women's professional soccer flourish and grow for the fans in that region," said Antonucci. "Peter and his team have the expertise, and have built a solid and achievable business model to ensure that an interested lead investor will come forward and own one of the star Franchises in the new league."

"This League has gone to school on the successes and the failures of the WUSA and has created a business model that makes more sense," said Wilt. "The new business model has significantly reduced overhead and is taking advantage of synergies with the new generation of soccer centric stadia and existing professional men's teams. Partnering with Toyota Park will allow the team to grow financially and showcase the sport in an appropriate sized venue.

"Unlike the first effort for a professional women's soccer league in this country, this time the league is reaching out to existing professional men's teams to partner with on marketing, sales, promotional and operational platforms. We plan to reach out to the Fire in hopes of taking advantage of these synergies, which will reduce overhead and maximize revenue generation."

The partnership with the IWSL makes the youth and adult soccer league equity partners in the team. The IWSL will build in ticket vouchers to all members' registrations, which - when combined with projected companion ticket purchases - will provide more than 50,000 fans over the team's ten-game home schedule at Toyota Park or an average of more than 5,000 tickets per game.

The WSII (www.wsii.org) is a non-profit organization backed by grants from the U.S. Soccer Federation and U.S. Soccer Foundation. The organization was founded to build a new business plan to relaunch women's professional soccer in the United States. Eight ownership groups have signed letters of intent to launch teams in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Dallas, Chicago, New Jersey/New York, Boston and a market to be named later.

The Central Florida Strikers of the South Conference will host the WPSL Final Four this July 28-29 at Strikers Stadium at the David Maus Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, FL. In the WPSL, the host team does not automatically qualify for the Final Four. Representatives from the re-vamped North, Midwest, South, Southwest & West Conferences will fight it out this postseason for the right to claim their team as the best of the best in the United States.

The West and Midwest Conference regular season champions will receive automatic bids, while the East, South and Southwest Conferences will undergo knock-out rounds for the remaining two Final Four berths.

Good to see the asylum ladies are off to a winning start.

Do you have any links to tables for these leagues so that we can follow them a bit better? Although I suppose I could do a search...

Last weekend was the first weekend for W.P.S.L. games and for the rival W-League and not all the divisions have started yet. I'll try to post something useful as soon as the season is a bit further under way.

Not enough ambition, I'm afraid - they've folded without playing a League game.
