2006 FIFA World Player of the Year - Marta
« on: December 19, 2006, 06:20:24 PM »
Brazil's Marta has been voted FIFA Women's World Player of the Year for 2006, overcoming challenges from the Kristine Lilly (USA) and Renate Lingor (Germany) after the shortlist was cropped to only three. Lilly took the silver award and Lingor the bronze.

The 20 year-old, who plays her club football for Swedish champions and UEFA Women's Cup finalists, Umea IK, was congratulated by Ronaldo, after an emotional acceptance of the award.

It was third time lucky for Marta Vieira da Silva, who had come close to winning the prize in each of the past two years, picking up bronze in 2004 and silver in 2005.

England's Kelly Smith was fifth in the voting.

Great to see Kelly coming in fifth. If I can remember correctly that is up five places from last year. So that would mean that next year she might...  ha ha
