Massively exciting weekend with virtually all great games for the supporters:

Kolbotn/Klepp - Kolbotn back home on their turf with a bit more motivation this week and will be looking to dethrone the leaders.  Can Klepp keep surprising people?  Should be a fantastic match.  Kolbotn the 2-1 home favourite with Klepp at 3-1.

Stabæk/Avaldsnes - another super match-up.  Three cheers for the NRK and I'm sure LSK say's the same.  Avaldsnes will be looking to roll on and make their statement in the league.  Whoever loses this one has given up points in 2/4 matches.  Stabæk the 2-1 home favourite with Avaldsnes at 3-1.

Eline and Svenn Johansen

Trondheims-Ørn/Røa - a 2014 Cup replay.  I doubt anyone who saw that could ever forget the stunning Eline Johansen.  Unfortunately she'll be coaching from the bench this time.  Last home game Trondheim beat Avaldsnes handily and that and the Cup semi are probably why the bookmakers have them large favourites with Røa at three times their odds to win.  But this game is up for grabs.

Medkila/Amazon Grimstad - the southerners will be looking to pull away from the drop zone but the northerners proved last week they're nobody's fool.  Will it be Amazon Grimstad moving into mid-table or Medkila pulling out of relegation?  A key match for both.  The bookmakers have them a virtual dead heat and coin flip.

Arna-Bjørnar/Vålerenga - who would have guessed that in round three this would be the only matchup of winless teams?  Vålerenga won't be inside on turf in the Vallhal and will be outside on the grass at Arne Stadion in Bergen.  The Bears are 2-1 and Enga 3-1.

Then we have LSK/Sandviken.  Betting 100k on the Lillestrøm ladies will make you 3k if they win, betting 100k on Sandviken will make you 2,190k if they win.  If I was the Sandviken coach I'd bet 100k on it for each of my players and on the morning of match day tell them if they go out and win the game today they'll all get name-embroidered and club-crested top of the line gore-tex training gear.  In their first four matches Sandviken have run Kolbotn, Stabæk and LSK.  Their real season begins next week against Medkila.

Nice to see a picture of Eline.  Last year I was in Honningsvåg briefly and was stood there in the sunshine after a heavy snowstorm reading 'Nordlys', which is the local paper from Tromsø.  A woman saw me and assumed I was from Tromsø the same as her, so she started talking to me and it turned out she was a friend of Eline's mother . . small world!  Eline has had terrible luck with injuries but it's great that she is still contributing as a trainer, officially Røa's assistant trainer now.

She is a hard-working, tough ball-winner who makes everyone around her better and the measured and sharp eye of the national trainer picked up on her last season. Røa with her were sensational last season and without were humbled.  As a little green man would say "the force is strong in this one."

Being in Honningsvåg reading a paper in the sunshine... now there's a great day.   Have you read We Die Alone yet?

It's of the epic journey genre.  For when you need some escapism and dreams of traveling around the north again.

No goals until 45' today and then seven in the remainder.  Tina Algrøy with a pair for the Bears and Anne Lise Olsen with the hat trick to give the win to Vålerenga and jump top of the scorers with Synne Jensen.

So here we are four matches in with LSK well out of the gate like last season but not as emphatically, their five goals scored this season are a spectre of the 18 they had last year.  Klepp holding second and strong out of the gate but haven't met any of the predicted medal contenders yet.  Then a five-team logjam with a peloton who've each given up five points in four matches.  Shades of 2014.  Then Amazon Grimstad and Vålerenga followed by Medkila and the two Bergen sides with a point each.

On the positive side, there's a lot of parity right now.  There aren't a handful of teams that you go onto the field with knowing you're coming off with three points.  Makes for a much more difficult and exciting season.  They were talking about shrinking the league but after four rounds:

- only one team has scored more than four goals in a match
- the league winners have won 1-0 three times and 2-0 against the two relegation teams and another one win above
- of 24 matches, half have been within one goal or less

This weeks matches are as much an on-any-given-Sunday as this week:

THURSDAY
Roa - Kolbotn

FRIDAY
Sandviken - Medkila
Amazon Grimstad - Arna-Bjornar
Klepp - Stabaek
Valerenga - Trondheims-Ørn
Avaldsnes - LSK

Avaldsnes gunning for LSK
« Reply #46 on: April 29, 2015, 12:43:47 PM »
Avalsnes is aiming to make inroads into LSK Kvinner's points lead at the top of the table, when the two teams meet on Saturday.  "It's important for us to win the match", said Tom Nordlie.

Round 5 starts with Røa v Kolbotn on Thursday and continues with two matches on Friday and three on Saturday.  Avaldsnes v LSK will be shown on NRK1 on Saturday afternoon.

"If we lose we will be eight points behind; if we win we will be within two points, so a win is important for us but it will be tough", said trainer Nordlie.  "Now the focus for us is to develop as a team and I think we are going in the right direction.  The season so far has shown us that it's more even than before and most matches are tough even for the top teams; so I think LSK and Stabæk will lose a few points along the way".  The kickoff is at 17.00 on Saturday.

Earlier on Saturday an unbeaten Klepp team will welcome Stabæk to Klepp Stadium.  The home team has three wins and a draw against Kolbotn last weekend.  Stabæk lost to LSK and then had two wins before last Saturday's goalless draw against Avaldsnes.

Stabæk will be looking for points.  "We are pleased that we kept the scoresheet clean against a tream that will score in nearly every match they are going to play because of the trio they have at the front.  It's seldom that they go off the field with as few chances as they had against us", said Stabæk trainer Øyvind Eide to fotball.no, talking about the match at Avaldsnes in round 4.

But he expects a tough contest at Klepp.  "We lost away to them last year so we will be wanting revenge.  We will meet an aggressive team with an intensity in their play and speed in their counterattacks.  It will be tough and the Toppserien is harder than it was before, and we are noticing it", said Eide.  He is not worried about the five-point gap up to LSK Kvinner.  "We were five points behind in the spring and summer last year as well, but we took them in the autumn and were ahead of them before we had injuries at the end of the season.  There's no point looking at the table after four rounds", he said.

Wondering what Guro Reiten got the red card for yesterday.  Nice save by Trondheim in the dying seconds for the point and snatching two from Vålerenga's pocket.

We are five rounds in and only 2/12 teams have a better than 50% win percentage, and LSK are undefeated at the top of the table but have the second-lowest goals-for in the league.

Apparently the taste of blood they got from Lyn worked wonders for LSK's absent goal scoring.  Klepp with Lena Soleng Hansen's red card had the wheels fall off and their swagger will take a reality check.  As interesting as LSK filling Klepp's net is, conceding none to take their shutout streak to six is notable too.

There was some high drama in Bergen, I think the equalizer came in the 97th minute just before the whistle.  Marit Fiane Grødum helps Amazon Grimstad not go home empty-handed.

They had Cecilie Pedersen down for four like Isabell Herlovsen but it looks like they've taken one away, so she is in second (with Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir and Synne Jensen) but halfway and four back of her.

Gunhild Herregården with another free kick as Røa goes up twice and holds for away points and leaves Stabæk with 8 to LSK's 18.

With a win at home tomorrow Trondheim can move to third ahead of Avaldsnes, but they'll likely have to do it without Guro Reiten who was dismissed last round.  Arna Bjørnar can steer clear of the danger zone with a road win.

Back to the parity angle, 11/12 teams have scored between 7-13 goals, 8/12 between 9-13.

Not a lot of predicted parity this week:

The oddsmakers have:

  • Avaldsnes at home on their grass pitch 17 times likely to win over Amazon Grimstad
  • LSK at home 12 times likely over Vålerenga
  • Stabæk at home 6 times likely over Arna-Bjørnar
  • Klepp twice as likely over Sandviken on the west coast
  • Kolbotn at home the close one with a 50% expectation over Trondheims Ørn

Had Klepp not been taken apart by LSK last weekend those odds would be 10x what they are.

A statistical aberration: we are almost halfway through round eight and 5/12 teams have a single loss.  And Stabæk and Avaldsnes are not among them.

There will be some good spirits on the westward flights home with a great weekend for the west coast teams taking most of the points available to them.

LSK back on track and showing as they did last season they can wipe off a bad result.  After getting schooled by LSK, Avaldsnes looking like they're starting to gel and have scored 16 in three rounds, with Cecilie Pedersen the hottest player in the league by a considerable margin with six goals in a little over a week.

In 22 matches last season, Stabæk tied four and lost two.  Just eight games in they already have a worse record.  I doubt there's a person alive who predicted week eight would have them winning 2/8.

We're down to three teams with a single loss now:  LSK, Røa and Kolbotn.  LSK are first in goals-against, Røa and Kolbotn tied for second.

Norway will receive a second Champions League berth in 2016-17, but just one again next year in 2015/16.  So unless LSK has post-World Cup psychological burnout, the real drama this season will be the drop zone with a half-dozen teams all dancing with the devil.

Only one team besides Klepp has two scorers in the top 10 - Arna Bjørnar (with one win in eight matches).

Toppserien ticker now at 21 days.

Opposites attract - LSK with one loss in eight visit the Bears with one win in eight.

Medkila have more losses than anyone and are bottom of the league but with a win over Vålerenga sit a point behind them mid-table.

Trondheim and Stabæk duke it out up north, with the Eagles scandalously five points up in the standings.  Stabæk are winless in five.

Hot and cold Sandviken head to west Oslo to face Røa looking for the form from their 3-0 Klepp or 0-1 LSK and not 1-1 Amazon Grimstad or 1-3 Medkila.  Røa are unbeaten at home.  Sandviken are winless on the road but did hold LSK to 1-0 in the LSK-Hallen.

Amazon Grimstad host Kolbotn and despite starting Marit Fiane Grødum and a half-dozen internationals will have their work cut out with a Jensen-less Kolbotn.  Really tragic they received nothing for her.  Kolbotn are on a run of four straight draws but know if they want to taste medals that matches like this one are make-or-break'ers.

The match of the week is the Avaldsnes at Klepp as both teams are tied for second in the table.  Both teams have seen 31 goals in the games they've played.  But that's where the similarities start to end.  Avaldsnes goals for/against is 23/8, Klepp are 15/16.  But at home Klepp are perfect and 10/3.  Avaldsnes have been on turf three times this year and won just one.
