When you go to the doctor for emergency life-saving brain surgery, would you rather have someone from your gender or the best doctor available?  I wish more people would view match officials like that.

If you want to develop female officials, great.  Do that with education and training and Division 1.  When some rise to be able to consistently handle the Toppserien level of play and professionalism, fantastic.  But too many of the matches I saw the level of officiating was noticeably below the level of play on the field.

"Good year for women's football"
« Reply #2 on: January 02, 2015, 09:07:08 AM »
The NFF's top football chief for women, Heidi Støre, says the 2014 season is a sign that things are going in the right direction.  "I said a year ago that we would have the best-ever Toppserien, and we did.  This has been a year in which we have gone in the right direction in every way", she told fotball.no.

The high point came when LSK and Stabæk met in the last round to decide the winner.  "LSK had a five-point lead for the summer break, but lost it and we had a thriller to end the season.  There was high quality football and a good TV product with a lot of people in the stands", said Støre.

LSK Kvinner set a new crowd record in the match, as they had also previously done against Vålerenga.  "The main signal is that 2014 has been a great year for Norwegian women's football, and several clubs have stood out", she said.  "LSK took The Double and had a dream of a season.  That does not happen automatically, and they have set the standard for the other clubs.  They are well organised, have their finances right, and they have introduced two professional days each week".

"I am also impressed by Stabæk, who in spite of their big injury problems competed all the way.  They have a winning culture, and despite losing six or seven key players they hung in until the end of the season, which is a strong performance.  Also they impressed against Wolfsburg in the Champions League", said Støre.  "Arna-Bjørnar took bronze again even though they had lost players.  Then we have a young Kolbotn team that impressed.  Avaldsnes perhaps hoped for more, but seen all round the Toppserien season has been a very good one".

"Did any players stand out?" - "Especially at LSK and Stabæk there are noteable players.   The trio of Mykjåland, Haavi and Herlovsen means a lot both to LSK and the national team.  At Stabæk Trine Rønning had one of the best seasons of her career.  She was very strong".

"In general we are developing a breadth of players.  We can see that in the national team.  Before, we had a very strong eleven but now we are developing a strong squad.  At the European Cup it was really great to be able to make six changes for the match against Germany and maintain the level.  So the development of players has been fantastic", she said.

In addition to those who are on the way up, Støre is pleased to see players deciding to prolong their careers.  "It's good to see young players coming up through the youth international teams, but at the same time the average age has increased.  It means we are managing to keep players longer.  That applies to the clubs as well as the national team", she said.

The season ended with the Cup Final at Telenor Arena.  "We had three good finals on the girls' side.  The U19 had an entertaining Final with two sides who really competed.  Then we had the U16s with Lyn and Forus og Gausel playing in Telenor Arena, which was huge fun.  Then we finished with a tremendous Final between LSK and Trondheims-Ørn.  It all points to a successful 2015 season".

"What about 2015? what can we expect?" - "The Toppserien will be even better.  The progress has momentum and the development will continue.  LSK has set the standard and it will be exciting to follow them in the Toppserien and in the Champions League.  The power and tempo that is being shown will continue".

The game also received a new appearance when Tom Nordlie accepted the offer to take over Avaldsnes.  "Tom Nordlie comes in with his experience and skill.  It will be exciting to see what hea can do at Avaldsnes.  It's also a strong signal to women's football", said Støre.

2015 will also be very exciting for the national team.  In June the World Cup starts in Canada.  "Qualifying for the World Cup was impressive.  All credit to the players, trainers and support team.  We could always expect that the national team would go through the qualification phase, but that is no longer the case now that Belgium and the Netherlands are two very strong nations.  We also had Portugal to play.  With the big upsurge in level there is no automatic place for Norway any more.  But the girls did the job and won nine out of ten.  That was a strong performance".

"We also had a good draw in the World Cup.  There are no easy matches but we could have had it a lot more difficult.  Thailand is a new nation but we can expect quick technical football.  Ivory Coast is like the other African teams: physically strong, robust and quick.  No match will be simple but we have a good chance of going further", said Støre.

"How far can we go?" - "It will be exciting to see whether players like Ingvild Stensland and Ingvild Isaksen will be fit to play.  But we have a strong squad and we are no longer as vulnerable as we used to be".

The former World Cup and Olympics winner has great expectations for the World Cup.  "I believe we will improve on the 2011 World Cup", she said.

Not only the A-team excelled in 2014.  "Altogether our youth international teams have played 41 matches, from U15 all the way up to U23.  We have full-time staff for the U16, U17, U19 and U23 teams and we also have Roar Wold who has done a great job with the U15s.  It has been a good year for these teams as well".

Then we must not forget that Norway took bronze in the U19 European Cup, arranged by Norway.  "It was fantastic.  I was proud to be Norwegian and part of the NFF.  The local clubs provided great venues and the same applied to the Final at Ullevaal.  Just to to be there was an experience of a lifetime for the U19s".

All the youth team delivered strong results.  Both teams that played Euro qualification went through to the elite round.  "We have many young players who are stepping up.  Among them was Synne Jensen, who has been taken up into the A-team.  Some of the U19s, U17s and U16s are coming through also, so there is good future.  We look forward to following these teams in 2015", said Heidi Støre.

Going a month without a match in a World Cup year?
No matches with Kolbotn and Arna-Bjørnar?
Watching Stabæk 3/4 games?
Four matches involving just four teams?

Yes they went down 0-2 but Therese Johaug is being called the new queen today with Marit Bjoergen now the princess and Heidi Weng calling her insane and the energizer bunny.  Funny piece on a fan's selfie fail.

Toppserien kickoff
« Reply #13 on: March 16, 2015, 10:38:53 PM »
Today the Toppserien clubs had their own kickoff ceremony to the season on NFF-TV.  The first matches are scheduled for Monday March 29.

The NFF has taken over the ceremony after the disastrous kickoff a couple of years ago when NRK staged it while all the clubs were at La Manga, so that only a few injured players could take part, and it was anchored by a couple of chat-show types whose knowledge of women's football hovered around absolute zero :).

The NFF ran the ceremony with presenters borrowed from NRK, with that well known anchor women from Toppserien matches, Carina Olset.  She was helped in the studio by Lise Klaveness and Olav Traaen, and some invited guests, including New Zealand's former captain Rebecca Smith who now works for FIFA and brought the World Cup with her to put on display in the studio.  Smith has played in a number of countries and for her interview about the arrangements for the World Cup she chose to speak Swedish for the Norwegian audience.

Solveig Gulbrandsen and Ada Hegerberg were interviewed on the sofa, as were Monica Knudsen, Øyvind Eide and Tom Nordlie, the trainers of the top three teams according to pre-season opinions.  A few of the toppserien players were also interviewed but other than that they were there as a studio audience.

NFF-TV keeps most videos for a while.  Smith did a pretty good job.  Also they had an interview with Caroline Graham Hansen on the programme.  Caro has a very engaging manner and has come a long way from that monosyllabic teenager who joined Stabæk 4-5 years ago :).

The programme was not really a Toppserien kickoff given the amount of time devoted to the World Cup, which some people are complaining about today.  It was a 1-hour programme, so a quarter of an hour covering the Toppserien was more than the Toppserien has had in some recent years :).  All the clubs flew in the trainer and one player, and it would have been good to see something of more of them.  But I suppose they met the press while they were there.

Toppserien 2015 kickoff
« Reply #17 on: March 17, 2015, 07:28:09 PM »
Avaldsnes trainer Tom Nordlie cautioned against LSK Kvinner and Stabæk dividing up the title between them before a ball has been kicked in this year's Toppserien.

"Medals have three colours and we'll have to see who wins what.  It could well be someone not sitting on this sofa", he said, sitting alongside Monica Knudsen and Øyvind Eide.  "There are always some surprises, positive and negative, so I don't think these two should be so overconfident".

The three had just been asked which team would take the title.  "I think it will be us", said LSK's trainer.  "I think it will be us", said Stabæk's trainer.  "But I don't just think it, I know it".  Nordlie's reply to that was: "well, we haven't a chance!".

He spoke in humour, with a pinch of seriousness thrown in.  But Lise Klaveness has belief in the team from her own part of the country, the west coast.  "The biggest chance is with Avaldsnes, and it's because of Tom.  If he gets energy into the players they can surprise.  Otherwise it will be LSK or Stabæk.  LSK played better and better last season, while Stabæk impressed as well with the multiple injuries the team took".

There is a long summer break in the league, with the national team's involvement starting on May 18.  But many of the clubs will still have full squads who have to train through the summer, which is something Klaveness disagrees with.  "The top teams will lose the most players.  It will be worth it if the team has a good tournament, with the players coming back in good humour.  All the other players will have to bide their time during the long break", she said.

LSK won the Double last year and will go for the two titles again in 2015.  Meanwhile Stabæk will be seeking revenge.  "Naturally.  There were more crutches than boots in Stabæk's locker room in the autumn", said Eide.

"We are clearly after revenge, as we showed in the autumn.  That is one of our strengths.  We will take that with us into the coming season", said Cathrine Dekkerhus.

LSK Kvinner's Anna Westerlund said that the club had come down to earth and was making a fresh start.  "We must start everything again.  As we did last year, we must have a new beginning.  We start with zero points.  The important thing is to have a tight team, keep ourselves fresh and train well, and if we are lucky the points will come", she said.

Many see these three teams as medal favourites.  But Tom Nordlie does not see it as a shoe-in.  "I'm looking forward to it, but I don't think Avaldsnes, Klepp and Arna-Bjørnar think there are only three in the race.  We must win plenty of matches without things looking particularly good, and then we have to play matches in my style right through the season", he said.  "The smartest thing is not to be too smart.  I have been in this game 28 years, and I have never met a trainer who thinks in the long term".

Relegation will probably be between Sandviken, Medkila, Amazon and Klepp.  Madeline Giske is a league winner with LSK Kvinner, but will now compete with Sandviken at the other end of the table.  "It will be exciting.  We believe we can establish ourselves in the Toppserien, we are looking forward to it.  We want to contest the top place in Bergen with Arna-Bjørnar but I don't think it will be this year", she said.

Not surprisingly, Lise Klaveness believes in the team from her home town of Bergen.  "I think Sandviken will stay up.  Their level belongs in the Toppserien.  Amazon will compete at the bottom because they have lost a lot of players.  So have Medkila.  Klepp will reckon they are a step up from 11th and 12th places, but they won't be at the top", she said.
