Mexican women defeat Japan 2-1, but fail to qualify for World Cup

MEXICO CITY -- The Mexican women's soccer squad defeated Japan 2-1 Saturday, but Japan advanced to a berth in the World Cup this September in China because it won the first leg of the two-match playoff 2-0.

Eriko Arakawa scored Japan's only goal 11 minutes into the contest. Fatima Leyva scored on a penalty kick 6 minutes later, and Maribel Dominguez later put Mexico ahead by knocking in a pass from Lisa Gomez.

Japan took the one of the last remaining places for this years World Cup dispite losing to Mexico in the second leg of they're play off tie.  A 2-0 win in the first leg with an early goal in the second was enough to take them through on a 3-2 aggregate.

Japan seal Finals berth
Monday, 19 March 2007.

Japan have qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the fifth time in a row, despite losing the second leg of the AFC/CONCACAF play-off against Mexico in Toluca.

A 2-0 victory in the first leg had given them a good cushion going into the return match and their position was strengthened further when Eriko Arakawa scored after 12 minutes to stretch Japan's lead.

Yet just four minutes later Mexico found themselves level on Saturday night when Fatima Levya steered the ball home. In the 28th minute, Maribel Dominguez raised the hopes of the home team still further when she steered the ball home.

Despite intense pressure for the remainder of the match, Japan's defence held firm for a 3-2 aggregate win.

Japan are the 15th qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup, with only the representative of the Oceania Football Confederation still to be decided.
