Iron man Tim DeBoom of the USA pitted himself against the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon, winning the competition in 11 hours 18 minutes 47 seconds.  "This is the toughest I have known", said the winner after he crossed the finishing line 22 minutes before the next man.

The race starts with swimming in the Hardanger Fjord and finishes with a run up Gaustatoppen.  "Seeing competitions like this gives me hope for the sport", said DeBoom.

For the third year in a row, Sweden's Susanne Buckenlei was the first woman to finish.

Dag Oliver is the project leader for the Norseman.  "The distances are the same as in ordinary iron-man triathlons round the world, but we have much tougher terrain with ascents totalling 16,500 feet", he said.

Even for these tough competitors the swim of 3.8 kilometres had to be relocated because the water in Hardangerfjord was at only ten degrees.  This year the swim went ahead at Ringøy, where the temperature is 17 degrees.  "Because of that the cycle stage was 20 kilometres longer than normal", said Oliver.  Several competitors had to give up in the swim, which started from a car-ferry at 5 a.m.  "There were a lot of waves at the end.  Those who didn't complete the swim in 2½ hours were not allowed to continue", said Oliver.

The cycle route over Hardangervidda started in fog, but the sun came out after a while.  "It was nice cycling weather, but perhaps a little warm for running", said Oliver.

160 competitors reached the finish at Gaustatoppen and received their black Norseman T-shirt as a prize.  Competitors who did not complete part of the run by a given time had to finish at Gaustablikk Hotel at a height of 3300 feet and received a white T-shirt instead.

For the first time the Norseman had a handicapped competitor.  Deaf and blind Bedir Yiyit took part in his first long-distance triathlon.  With his guide Rune Holtze Jensen he finished in 16:26:14.
