Japanese women defeat Mexico in World Cup playoff

TOKYO: Midfielder Homare Sawa scored a goal and set up another Saturday as Japan defeated Mexico 2-0 in the first leg of a playoff for September's women's soccer World Cup in China.

Sawa put Japan ahead with a header in the 38th minute and then helped her team double its lead after the break when she set up Ai Miyama, who scored 20 minutes from fulltime.

Mexico, ranked 26th, came close to tying the game in the 64th minute when Evelyn Lopez forced Japan goalkeeper Miho Fukumoto to make a diving save. Minutes later, Mexico captain Maribel Dominguez hit the crossbar with a lob from 30 meters out.

The two teams will play again March 17th in Toluca, Mexico.

Japan, ranked 11th, has qualified for all four previous women's World Cups since the inaugural tournament in 1991. Japan beat Mexico 4-2 on aggregate to advance to the last Women's World Cup in the United States in 2003.
