Women's World Cup Qualifying set for Cancun
« on: August 13, 2010, 02:39:26 PM »
Mexico will host the CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifying tournament in the Yucatan Peninsula resort of Cancun, and face Canada, Trinidad and Guyana in the first round.

Formerly known as the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, the tournament will be played October 28-November 8 and send the winner and runner-up to the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. The third-place finisher will face the fifth-place team from Europe for an additional berth.

"We are thrilled that Mexico will serve as the host for the upcoming CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifying tournament," CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer said. "There's no doubt that Cancun and Playa del Carmen will serve as a fantastic setting as our top women's teams top seek to qualify for the World Cup."

Mexico, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana were drawn Thursday into Group A that will play in Estadio Beto Ávila in Cancún, while Group B, with the three-time defending champion United States, Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala, will face off in Estadio Unidad Deportiva in Playa del Carmen.

Estadio Unidad Deportvo is home to Inter Playa del Carmen, which plays in Mexican soccer's third division, while the Estadio Beto Avila is the regular venue for the Quintana Roo Tigres baseball team.

This is the first time Mexico has hosted the confederation's women's nations championship. The United States has won the title every time since 2000, when the Women's Gold Cup was established. It won three of four titles before that, dating back to 1991 when the tournament was known as the CONCACAF Women's Championship.

The only other nation to win the crown was Canada in 1998, when the United States did not participate due to having an automatic berth for the World Cup as host in 1999.

Match dates and times will be announced in the near future.

GROUP A
Mexico
Canada
Trinidad & Tobago
Guyana

GROUP B
United States
Costa Rica
Haiti
Guatemala

Shock in Mexico...the host nation beat the USA 2-1 and qualify for the World Cup along with Canada. The USA have to beat Costa Rica for third place and then play off with a European team (Italy ?) to get into the 2011 World Cup ..          http://www.shekicks.net/news/view/1968

Yup, Italy.

The Italians no doubt tearing their hair out as we speak.
For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name / He writes - not that you won or lost - but how you played the Game.

Unlucky Italia lol. Saying that Costa Rica could cause another upset couldn't they?
Also Italy are a good defending unit and USA seem to have a creativity problem and going route 1 to Wambach under pressure.
