City to face Duisburg

Glasgow City face one last match in Group 7 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League First Round and it couldn’t be any tougher – German giants Duisburg.

As soon as the draw was made in June, City Manager Peter Caulfield, commented that this was the one team he wanted to avoid, but with a history of drawing some of the toughest opponents, City were once more paired against a German side.

Caulfield said, “We stated all along that we wanted to avoid Duisburg, but that was not to be the case and now we face them in a huge match to decide the Group on Tuesday. Without doubt they are one of the top teams in the world, with a number of the best players in the world in their side. You just have to mention household name of players like Inka Grings – the top goalscorer in the last two European Championships, and who was also named Germany player of the year today. Simone Laudehr is a regular for the national team, as is the giant Annike Krahn and we all know that Germany have dominated World Cups and European Championships in recent years. Indeed having only just turned 25 last month, Krahn is already a double World Champion. They also have amazing younger players, such as Alexandra Popp, who was named the best player and top goalscorer as Germany triumphed in the Under 20 World Cup only last week. I could name the whole Duisburg team and honours and achievements follow them all. They won the UEFA Women’s Champions League last season and only lost out this year in penalties in the semi-final to the eventual winners, Postdam. However, despite Duisburg being clear favourites, we are here to give a good account of ourselves and Scottish football. Every player is determined to give 100% and that is all I can ask of them. If they do their very best, they will have done themselves justice.”

City take on Duisburg on Tuesday 10th August at Ballymena Showgrounds. Kick off 17:00
