Akers - Expect two more summer signings
« on: July 13, 2010, 06:57:48 PM »
Ellen White will not be the only big name to join Arsenal Ladies this summer, according to Vic Akers.

The 21-year-old England striker has rejoined the Club she left five years ago and was welcomed back on Tuesday at the training ground by the Ladies' General Manager.

Laura Harvey takes care of team affairs these days but Akers is still involved in the recruitment of players and he wants to add even more quality to the squad before the Champions League campaign begins in September.

"Ellen is the first of three signings we look like making," he told Arsenal.com. "One of the others is an all-rounder, the third is a midfield player. They are big names in the women's game so that's nice.

"The two to follow will happen quickly but this [signing White] was organised as the season ended so we always had this in mind.

"We are obviously delighted and the manager is delighted that she signed and we see her as a good figure. She knows the Club and the way we deal with things and the way we act here. She is a well-behaved person from a lovely family with good parents, so a typical Arsenal player for me."

Akers was in charge when White was discovered by Arsenal Ladies scouts at the age of eight. She left in search of first-team football eight years later but her old manager never doubted White would eventually return.

"She was here as a baby and she came through the Centre of Excellence but then at 16 she went to Loughborough with the England set-up and then really wanted first-team football, which we couldn't offer at the time," explained Akers.

"We had Kelly Smith and Julie Fleeting up front at the time, so it was tough for the young ones to break in at that point. She decided to have a couple of years away and play at other clubs and hence went to Chelsea and then on to Leeds.

"With the break up at Leeds and their main players leaving to play in next year's Super League, it was appropriate [for her to return]. She has always had the door open for her here anyway.

"We are hoping that she will figure greatly in a successful year and she'll make a good pairing with Fleeting and those coming through. We are looking sharp and bright up front."

It looks like the rumours were right. I reckon the all-rounder will be Steph Houghton and the midfield player will be Jordan Nobbs.

I have been told Jordan Nobbs has signed for Arsenal and Lucy Bronze is looking for a Superleague Club.
I am sure one of the 8 club needs a right back/center back who is quality.

Jordan would be another great signing as she is young and talented.

New signings, youngsters and also see which players are missing. Players who've played a lot recently like Gilly might be given extra time off.
