King names starting XL
« on: March 07, 2007, 03:38:18 PM »
Republic of Ireland Senior Women's Manager, Noel King has named his side to play Portugal in Ireland's Algarve Cup opener in Lagos this afternoon. Niamh Fahey, All Ireland Gaelic Football winner with Galway get's her first ever senior cap as she starts at left back.

Returning to the team is the highly rated Bristol Rovers striker, Stephanie Curtis who missed most of Ireland's World Cup Qualifiers last year through injury. King has also been given a massive boost ahead of the Algarve Cup with Arsenal's Yvonne Treacy back in the squad after a long term injury.

Republic of Ireland Manager, Noel King was optimistic about Ireland's chances at the Algarve Cup, "Over the next six months, we have a hectic schedule with the UEFA Championships Qualifiers starting on April 1st against Hungary, in my opinion, that campaign starts today with a tough test against Portugal, if we win today, we have a great chance to do well in this competition."

"Preparation for the UEFA Championships is of vast importance and there is no reason why we can't push for qualification for the final tournament, we have a great blend of youth and experience in the side and I know the girls will not stand submissively aside against some of the finest sides in the world," he added.

Speaking of today's team, King added, "For Niamh Fahey, this a golden opportunity for her to make her mark at senior international level, there is massive competition for positions in the squad which will give me lots of welcome selection headaches over the campaign."

Niamh Fahey is a FAI scholarship recipient which is a specific objective of the 'Emerging Talent' programme of the Women's Development Plan and is seen as providing a tremendous opportunity to support elite players who wish to continue their football development in tandem with their academic activities within Ireland.
