Former Roo to lead Young Roos
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:48:10 AM »
Former Socceroo Steve O'Connor has been announced as the new coach of the Young Socceroos while Alen Stajcic has been appointed as coach of the Young Matildas.

O'Connor, who is currently head coach of the men's football program at the Australian Institute of Sport, was capped 15 times by the Socceroos highlighted by an unsuccessful 1986 World Cup campaign

The 52-year-old will hold the position until the completion of 2007, with the preliminary qualifying matches for the 2009 World Youth Cup to be staged later this year to be of upmost importance.

Stajcic has been involved with the New South Wales Institute of Sport for six years, having held down the role of head coach, after previously coaching a Women's National Soccer League club.

The 33-year-old's role will run to the completion of the Under 20 Women's World Cup in 2008, with the qualifying matches commencing in October this year.

Football Federation Australia's head of high performance John Boultbee was ecstatic with the signing of the pair, and is hopeful they can lead Australia's youth football program to higher accolades.

"We are continuing in the development of Australian coaches through our national youth team programs, and working closely with the AIS and State Institutes who are important partners in the development of our national team players," Boultbee said.

"The task ahead of both coaches of qualifying for the World Youth Cups through Asia is a formidable one, but the preparation which the players will receive with their Institutes, via preparatory matches and through these well qualified coaches will stand us in good stead."
