Watford Ladies FC hosted highly ranked Chinese side Beijing on Wednesday afternoon at the men's training ground. The visitors are full-time players who are currently undertaking a 10-day tour which will also see them meet Chelsea and Arsenal.

With the extremely hot weather and several of the senior players missing due to work commitments a focussed and determined young Watford line-up stepped out onto the field. Within a few minutes it was clear that the Chinese were well organised and had a game plan but the Hornets showed that they were equal to them and soon gained in confidence and started to play the ball around well.

Whilst both teams worked hard and executed their own styles of play, neither could break down the opposition and the game was 0-0 for most of the game. Manager Sian Williams took the opportunity to give top level experience to a few of the younger and newer players. Lauren Davey, no stranger to high pressure situations stepped in as did 16 year olds Chloe Gunn and Kate Natkiel - both just signed from the Watford Centre of Excellence. All 3 acquitted themselves well.

In the last 10 minutes however, one of the Beijing forwards managed to find herself a slither of space on the edge of the area and unleashed a great shot that fired inside the post, just out of Davey's reach. As much as Watford pushed forward they couldn't quite finish a chance; Katie Owen forced a save from the goalkeeper after an acrobatic volley and Lizzie Edwards broke through the defence only to be thwarted by the keeper again.

So it ended, 1-0 to the experienced visitors from Beijing but a really positive and impressive performance from a depleted Watford squad.

Saturday saw Arsenal beat Beijing by 2-1 goals from Davison and Little.

I find it very  disappointing that those 3 games were not advertised as it was a good opportunity to see a different kind of football.
