Ladies Determined For Silverware

by Antonia De Feo | Monday 22 June 2009, 15:08

Everton Ladies are determined to lift silverware in the 2009/10 season.

The Ladies are continuing to train hard over the close-season, in a bid to ensure a solid start to the forthcoming campaign, having being denied silverware on the final day of the season by Arsenal on goal difference.

But before the Women’s Premier League gets underway in September, several of Mo Marley’s team will be representing their countries in international tournaments worldwide – experience that will only aid in their quest for the title.

“Hopefully I’ll be involved in the senior European Championships in Finland, which begin in the middle of August,” said Blues’ goalkeeper Rachel Brown.

“The majority of the Everton team are going to be involved in international football this summer, whether it be with the seniors, Under-23s, 19s or 17s, there’s going to be involvement throughout the whole squad, so it’s going to be a fantastic off-season leading into the Premier League in September.

“The England under-23s go away at the end of this month. We’re playing in America twice and Germany once, so its good experience,” explained defender Fern Whelan.

“We’re all training very hard,” added Brown. “At the moment it’s individual training and we’ll be getting back together as a team towards the end of June.

“We’re trying to train together as much as we can,” continued Whelan. “We all have our individual programmes but whenever we can join in together it helps having other people doing the same training as you around.”

First up for Everton Ladies in the 2009/10 campaign is an exciting entry into the Champions League, qualifying for the tournament as runners-up in the Women’s Premier League, the Blues will find out their opponents for their first European clash on 24 June.

just for you....

And the Ladies squad is certainly continuing to produce potential stars of the future, as more world-class potential continues to emerge on Merseyside.

“There were a couple of our Under-17s players who played in the World Cup last year in New Zealand, and that’s a testament to the quality we’ve got at a young level,” continued Brown. “A couple of the girls came through and made a couple of appearances in the senior team last season at only 16 or 17 years old, so they are obviously players for the future.

“Players like Toni Duggan, who has only just turned 18, have been playing regularly in the senior squad last season, so even though they are very young they’ve got a lot of experience at international level, which they can bring into their performance at domestic level.”

Whelan added: “We’ve got a lot of players in the Everton reserves that are moving up into the England age groups as well, so all the way through Everton, young to old, we are all on track for next season.

“This season we managed to push Arsenal all the way right to the end. Next season we want to make sure we have that little bit extra, to go on and will the league with Everton next season.”
