« on: February 28, 2007, 08:46:20 AM »
Chinese female footballer Ma Xiaoxu has been nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the year.

She is up against Lewis Hamilton, the first black driver to compete in Formula One and tennis star Amelie Maursmo. Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Michael Schumacher were again nominated again for the Sportsman of the Year Awards.

The winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards are voted for by the members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, and will be announced on April 2nd.

China's football sensation Ma Xiaoxu received notice of the nomination on Monday ahead of the gala night in April. The 18-year-old football star won both the Golden Ball and Golden shoe in the FIFA Under 20 World Championship last year. She also contributed 5 goals for China to win the 2006 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

World tennis number one Roger Federer of Switzerland, who has just broke Jimmy Connors winning record, was nominated as the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. Joining him was golfer Tiger Woods. Both of them are two times winners of the award together with Formula one legend Michael Schumacher.

The German, who has just retired after winning seven world titles, was nominated for a record seventh time.

Belgian tennis star Justine Henin will be competing against Grand Slam winning rivals Maria Sharapova of Russia and France's Amelie Mauresmo.

Women's pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva and Sweden's Carolina Kluft, the heptathlon Olympic and word champion, are other strong contenders for the Sportswoman of the Year prize.
