The arguments continue every year about the merits and unfairnesses of the play-off systems at the end of the regular season.  In the UK, where play-offs in the professional Football League divisions are used to determine one of the promotion places, the financial benefits of the high attendances at the play-off games are felt to outweigh the potential (and often real) injustice of a team losing out on promotion to another side with far fewer points from a 46-match programme.

At the lower tiers of the football pyramid, this financial argument holds no similar merits since the gates aren't much different from normal but the system has now become well ingrained into our season.

The outcome of the WPS play-offs certainly throws up the same issues for debate.  Los Angeles were unbeaten by Sky Blue in the regular season games - winning 2 and drawing 1 of the games. Saint Louis must be wondering what happened too after winning all 3 of the regular season games against the New Jersey team. In contrast to the scenario in the UK professional men's leagues, the U.S. play-off game attendances weren't much different from those in the regular season.

Perhaps also we shouldn't knock our own women's competitions in the UK as much as we all do. The five English girls have shown themselves to be amongst the new League's top performers and the attendances for the WPS professional League games, including the play-offs, are well below those of the recent Cup Finals, where local marketing has been seriously attempted.

@redrobin,

Thanks for your information!

Week 4: 02-05-2010 Philadelphia Independence - Atlanta Beat

Week 1: 11-04-2010 Philadelphia Independence - Atlanta Beat 0-0  (6.028)

I wonder how many visitors will want to see the same teams again within three weeks?
