Chinese women's soccer team leave for Algarve Cup
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:36:07 AM »
Chinese women's soccer team left on Sunday for the 2007 Algarve Cup slated for early March in Portugal.

The team, who finished second at the recently concluded Four Nations Invitation Tournament in Guangzhou, will play a friendly match with France in Paris on February 28 before heading for the annual event starting on March 7.

However, the team's top star Ma Xiaoxu, the AFC's Women's Player of the Year, has to miss the event since she will complete the contract with the Swedish women's soccer champions Umea IK in the next few days.

"Ma's absence will affect the team's performance at the tournament, but she will come back in the squad at the World Cup this summer," said Wang Haiming, Chinese team's deputy coach, who will steer the squad during the Algarve Cup.
