UAB freshman earns spot on England's U21 national team
Feb. 8, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB women's soccer player Rachael Axon has been honored as one of 18 athletes named to England's Under 21 national team. The freshman defender/midfielder is the lone player on the elite squad that is from a United States college or university. The other 17 players all come from professional teams that compete in The Football Association's Women's Premier League in England.

"We are excited for Rachael," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "It's wonderful to see her continue to get opportunities to represent England.

"One of her goals in coming to UAB was to make progress toward eventually making the full national team. She has worked extremely hard over the last six months and should be ready for the challenge."

Axon, a native of London, England, played a vital role in UAB's Conference USA tournament championship title and berth into the NCAA tournament in 2006. She scored one goal on the year, in the C-USA tournament championship match, and also tallied three assists.

Axon was listed on the All-Conference USA second-team and the all-freshman squad. She was also honored as a member of the C-USA All-Tournament team.

This is not the first time that Axon has played on national teams, having previously been a member of England's U19 and U21 teams. In 2005, she helped her team to a third place finish in the U21 Nordic Cup.
