Women to host Brazil
« on: May 26, 2008, 05:49:49 PM »
Canada's well-travelled women's soccer team has seen the support other countries receive on pitches around the world. Finally it's their turn to soak up the home-crowd cheers.

The Canadians will host No. 4-ranked Brazil in a friendly at BMO Field on July 10, Canada's first home game in two years and part of the team's preparations for the Beijing Olympics.

"It would just be a huge boost to us," veteran midfielder Diana Matheson said. "We don't have very many games at home, and we're very separated from the people that are supporting us a lot of times when we're in China or Australia. We don't really see all those people that are behind us.

"A game in Canada would just be a huge deal for us, to feel the support."

Lack of home games has been the biggest complaint for the globe-hopping Canadian women. The team was in Australia last week, losing 2-1 to the Matildas in a friendly in Sydney on Friday.

The most recent time the Canadian women played in Canada was a 2-1 win over Italy at Toronto's Centennial Stadium on June 25, 2006.

"We're all very excited to get a game at home after two years, and I personally like that it's in Toronto obviously because my family is there and they can all come," Matheson said.

It will also be the Canadian women's debut at BMO Field.
