Wambach to Headline Celebration
Second Women’s Soccer Celebration to promote the spirit of sport
Fort Collins Press Release –

Wednesday, May 7

FORT COLLINS, COLORADO – Colorado will be the focus of women’s soccer on Thursday, May 15 when U.S. National Team superstar Abby Wambach joins executives from North America’s three leading women’s soccer leagues for the Women’s Soccer Celebration Summit at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park near Denver.

The first-of-its-kind Summit will include a 90-minute invitation-only forum to discuss the future of the women’s game. Wambach and league executives will then be available for a half-hour press conference open to the media and the public.

Following the Summit, soccer fans will see a unique doubleheader, kicking off at 4:30 p.m. with a United Soccer W-League exhibition match between the Fort Collins Force and the defending champion Washington Freedom. After the match, players from the Force and Freedom will conduct a skills clinic for youth players. Then fans will turn their attention to an MLS contest between the host Colorado Rapids and visiting Real Salt Lake.

The Summit will be hosted by the Force, a W-League franchise entering its 12th season. Force owner Amy Snider will serve as moderator for both the luncheon and the press conference. In addition to Wambach, Summit participants include Tonya Antonucci, commissioner for the new Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league, which is scheduled to launch in 2009 with eight teams; W-League Director Melanie Fitzgerald, President of the W-League Hampton Roads Piranhas, Marcie Laumann, and Jerry Zanelli of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Colorado Rapids Managing Director Jeff Plush will emcee.
