Olympique Lyonnais 1 - 1 Umeå IK
« on: March 30, 2008, 08:12:57 PM »
Louisa Necib's second-half goal kept Olympique Lyonnais in the hunt for a place in the UEFA Women's Cup final as the French side earned a 1-1 draw against Umeå IK.

Edlund opener
The hosts had the better of the opening stages as the Swedish visitors struggled to get up to pace, yet once Madelaine Edlund put Umeå in front just before the hour, Lyon looked like paying for their profligacy. Necib allayed those fears among the majority of the 12,000-strong crowd with 18 minutes remaining, however, and it proved enough to earn a draw to take into the second leg on 6 April.

Frenetic start
Lyon knocked out holders Arsenal LFC in the quarter-finals but if Umeå were hoping that was a fluke the notion was soon vanquished. Just one match into the new Swedish season, the visitors struggled to deal with the pace of the game early on as Hoda Lattaf rattled the crossbar from outside the box with just two minutes on the clock. It took a goalline clearance from Karolina Westberg to keep out Katia's header but led by Marta and Edlund, Andrée Jegelertz's side slowly came into their own.

Attacking risk
Bente Nordby, a winter arrival from Djurgårdens IF FF, made two good saves before the interval, but could do nothing on 58 minutes when Marta dispossessed Wendie Renard and fed Edlund to fire in. Lyon coach Farid Benstiti responded by bringing on Elodie Thomis for centre-back Renard in an attacking change, and Necib rewarded the risk by heading in the equaliser. Umeå might have restored their lead, but Nordby stood firm to leave the tie finely poised.

If the only prayer you say in your whole life is thank you, that would suffice.
