Belarus 1-6 England
By Tony Leighton in Minsk

Powell's team returned to form after some below-par displays

Everton midfielder Fara Williams hit a stunning hat-trick as England stormed to an important Euro 2009 qualifying victory in the rain and hail of Minsk.

It keeps Hope Powell's team on top of Group One and, with two matches left, on course for the finals in Finland.

Williams netted with long-range efforts on a pitch that, at times in the second half, was covered in hailstones.

The midfielder's Everton team-mate Jill Scott and Arsenal duo Lianne Sanderson and Faye White were also on target.

Since reaching the World Cup quarter-finals last September, England have been below par on all but a couple of occasions. Their most recent qualifier, against the Czech Republic at Doncaster, ended in a disappointing goalless draw after a dispiriting performance.  But they were back on song against Belarus and Powell said: "I'm far happier than I was after the Czech Republic game.

"Everything went according to plan - we passed the ball well and scored some excellent goals. Fara was outstanding, but it was a good team effort that got us the result."

Victory was on the cards from the opening moments as Scott headed England into the lead after just 30 seconds. Williams then struck home a 25-yard free-kick in the sixth minute, and 19 minutes later added her second with another superb strike from almost the same position.

Belarus captain Natalya Ryzhevich, in a rare attack by the home side, reduced the arrears with a cross-cum-shot on the half-hour.  But it was game over two minutes before the break as Sanderson's close-range shot gave England a fourth goal.

Williams, once more from around 25 yards, completed her hat-trick four minutes from time and captain White headed in the final goal seconds before the final whistle.

Powell said: "It's good to end the season on a high. The girls haven't had a break since qualifying for the World Cup finals, so they've now got a well deserved rest.

"Hopefully at the start of next season they'll come back refreshed and ready to finish the job."

England's final two qualifiers, both away from home, are against the Czech Republic on September 28 and Spain four days later.
