U.S. women on top of world soccer rankings

ZURICH, Switzerland, March 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. women's soccer team, riding an Algarve Cup championship, returned to the top of the women's world rankings, knocking Germany to No. 2, FIFA said.

The American team piled up four wins, including victories over No. 5 Norway and No. 8 Denmark, this month in winning the Algarve Cup for the fifth time in six years. The U.S. team is 7-0 this year.

Germany had taken the No. 1 ranking from the United States when the Germen women won the World Cup last September. But the Germans lost twice -- to Norway and Denmark -- in finishing fourth in the Algarve Cup and fell to No. 2 in the rankings released Friday.

The only other change in the women's soccer Top 10 was Japan moving up one spot to 10th, dropping England to 11.

Sweden held onto its No. 3 spot in the rankings followed by, in order, Brazil, Norway, South Korea, France, Denmark and Canada.
