US women book possible Olympic tune-ups with Aussies
« on: March 20, 2008, 08:50:59 PM »
CHICAGO (AFP) — Reigning Olympic women's football champion United States booked two home matches against Australia, hoping they will be used as tuneups for a title defense in August at Beijing.

US Soccer announced Thursday that the Matildas will play the US women on April 27 at Cary, North Carolina, and May 3 at Birmingham, Alabama. They will be the first games on US soil for Sweden's Pia Sundhage as the US team's coach.

The Americans will attempt to confirm their place in China next month at the North American qualifying tournament in Mexico. They face Jamaica and Mexico on April 4 and 6 respectively with the semi-finals April 9 and the final April 12.

Each finalist will qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

The Aussies, 12th in FIFA's women's world rankings have never defeated the US women, losing 16 times and drawing twice.
