Football Ferns desperate for goals
« on: March 01, 2008, 12:16:45 PM »
The New Zealand women's soccer team hope to improve on their record of one goal in the past 10 internationals when they start their trans-Tasman tri-series in Australia on Saturday.

The Football Ferns were last year competitive against the likes of China, Denmark and Australia, but will need to improve to make an impact against a strong Australian side.

The Australians went through the World Cup group stage unbeaten before losing to finalists Brazil, but New Zealand coach John Herdman said his team was ready to take a step up.

"Goals come with belief, and the team has shown a belief in themselves and the tactical approach," Herdman said.

"The team proved in the World Cup that they can defend and this is the natural progression, to marry up the team's natural strength - defending - to the strengths of individuals that can bring a new dimension to our play."

For New Zealand, at least one of recalled under-20 strikers Renee Leota and Emma Kete look likely to be given a chance to lead the front line, while 60-cap striker Wendi Henderson will set a new Football Fern record for appearances should she play.

The three game series is a warm up for both sides as they eye bigger prizes.

The Ferns travel to Port Moresby immediately following the series for a winner-takes-all Olympic qualifier against Papua New Guinea, while Australia are building towards the AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Saturday's match at Stockland Park on the Sunshine Coast starts at 7pm (NZT)
