Tanzania: A Shot in-the-Arm for Twiga Stars
« on: February 07, 2008, 07:48:27 PM »
Two women MPs jointly donated Sh400,000 to the Twiga Stars soccer team that is gearing up for this month's African Nations Cup qualifier tie against Cameroon.

Anne Kilango and Aziza Slyeim presented their donations through the deputy minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Joel Bendera.

Slyeim said the money was a result of collective efforts of women in Tabora region who used her as a representative to forward their donation.

She said Tabora women have been highly impressed by the stage the Twiga Stars team had reached in the continental tournament.

She noted that most soccer fans in the country have been more willing to sacrifice for the men's football teams than women's.

The MP said it was high time that regions should establish women's teams with the objective of promoting soccer and developing talents of the future stars.

Kilango, the eastern Same MP, said the donation represented efforts of women from her constituency.

She said it would have been very encouraging for women residing in Dar es Salaam to turn up in big numbers during the match in order to support the team.

Bendera expressed his appreciation of the efforts taken by the two MPs to show their support of the national team ahead of the match. He said the donations had been presented at the right time for the right purpose.

The deputy minister said already the TFF has a comprehensive programme for developing women's soccer that also needs to be backed by other stakeholders in the country.

He hoped that corporate sponsors would also come up with packages to support the team the way the national Microfinance Bank and M/s Serengeti Breweries have done for the men's side.
