Pre-Olympic football matches in Chennai
« on: February 02, 2007, 09:58:09 AM »
Chennai, Feb 2: Two important Pre-Olympic women's football matches will be held in the city under the directions of the world body FIFA and the Asian continental wing AFC.

Indian women take on Korea in the first match on February 25 and India or Myanmar will be playing Turkmenistan or Thailand on March 14.

Addressing a press meet here yesterday, C R Visswanathan, vice-president of All India Football Federation and president of the Tamil Nadu State Association, said, "It is the first time that the city has been given the chance to stage these matches considering the facilities available at the international standard Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here."

"FIFA had laid a precondition for an alternative stadium for practice purposes within the radius of five km from the main stadium, but Chennai is lacking this. However, the matches have been allotted."

"The Association is taking every step including appealing to the state government to allocate the nearby Kannappar Thidal, which could be developed into an alternative stadium for practice," he said.

AIFF secretary Albert Colaco had held discussions with the State Sports Development Authority in this regard.

Visswanathan said the first and senior division league matches have been shifted from the venue in December last in order to get the play field readied in time for the pre-Olympic matches.

"The government has already commenced work for improving facilities at the dressing rooms and scoreboards," he said. (Our Correspondent)
