Striker Sarah For Galaxy?
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:56:05 PM »
EXCLUSIVE: She's been rubbing shoulders with rock icon Elton John and football superstar David Beckham – now, livewire Matilda striker Sarah Walsh could be off to Los Angeles to play for the Galaxy.

“I'll definitely be going to the USA. It's just a matter of which club. I've got a few offers on the table,” she tells

“One is the women's team for LA Galaxy. And there is also a team in Manhattan. Either way I think I'll win.”

US women's soccer is semi professional currently, however, in 2009 a new, professional league will kick off. The 24-year-old striker's World Cup exploits in September should ensure she snares a pro league contract.

And since the World Cup in September – where the side reached the quarter finals – the Matildas have moved up a few rungs on the celebrity ladder here in Australia.

“Heather [Garriock] and I got to meet David Beckham the other night at the Foxtel party,” Walsh says of the exclusive 300-guest bash at Circular Quay in Sydney.

“These are the things we're starting to notice, people are really taking notice and gaining recognition we deserve.”

As for her brush with football royalty, Walsh is still pinching herself.

“It was a bit surreal seeing him. I know he's just a man and a footballer but he's a good looking one at that. He was really nice and he had a photo with Heather and myself. It was a good night.

“We only briefly spoke to him so he didn't know who we were. He was only there for about 20 minutes I think. And seeing Elton John and everything. It was nice.”

Walsh however hasn't ruled out playing in the inaugural season of the women's A-League next season.

“It just depends on when it is," she added. "I definitely want to get back for that.

"The gig in the US is only three or four months, so it may not clash with the A-League.”

In the meantime, Walsh is one of the stars of the A-League Women's Challenge tournament - a taster ahead of next year's Women's A-League.

Along with Heather Garriock, she has been called up to help the Queensland team this weekend at Suncorp stadium against Newcastle Jets Women.

Walsh is not surprised that the fans have turned out in very good numbers to see this mini tournament. However, she's a Sydney girl at heart and can't wait to perform in front of her home fans on December 15 before the Sydney versus Glory A-League clash.

“Definitely get there early," she said. "I love the Sydney crowd, their chanting is great.

"The Matildas were at a Sydney home game recently and the fans gave us a huge reception.”
