Sermanni re-signs as Matildas coach
« on: November 30, 2007, 07:23:29 AM »
Football Federation Australia extended the contract of coach Tom Sermanni to lead the Matildas to the 2011 World Cup and 2012 London Olympic Games.

Sermanni has achieved remarkable success since taking over the coaching duties in December 2004, leading the Australian women an all-time high world ranking of 12 after reaching the quarter-finals last September's World Cup until they were eliminated by eventual champions Brazil.

Under Sermanni's contract he will coach the national women's team and run the Australian Institute of Sport women's soccer program.

Sermanni is the only Australian with experience of senior coaching in the US Women's Professional Soccer League (WUSA) where he led the San Jose CyberRays and the New York Power.

He recently turned down an approach to coach the US national side.

"We are delighted that Tom will remain in Australian football where his vast knowledge and experience will be vital as we look to continue to build the women's game in this country," said FFA chief executive Ben Buckley.

"Tom has been an integral part of the Matildas success where his passion and understanding of the women's game in Australia is unparalleled.

"Tom will also play an integrated role in development across all aspects of women's football in Australia from grassroots to the elite level working closely with national technical director Rob Baan."
