Prinz inspires Frankfurt win
« on: November 21, 2007, 05:43:59 PM »
First-half goals from Petra Wimbersky and Birgit Prinz were enough for 1. FFC Frankfurt to overcome WFC Rossiyanka, with an Elena Morozova strike in added time proving to be scant consolation for the Russian side in front of a 2,165 crowd at the Brentanobad Stadium.

Sluggish start
The German side woke up after a sluggish start with Kerstin Garefrekes failing to connect with a dangerous ball from the right and then striking high with efforts in the 18th and 23rd minutes. However, Wimbersky was to open the scoring a minute later, finishing from close range after Prinz had rampaged into the box and slipped her a pass. Conny Pohlers could easily have added a second within five minutes but was denied by goalkeeper Iryna Zvarich.

Prinz strikes
However, Zvarich could not stop Prinz from doubling Frankfurt's lead after 44 minutes, as she picked up a pass from Pohlers and curled the ball elegantly in from 12 metres. Rossiyanka looked shellshocked after the break, even though Frankfurt were playing well within themselves, but still posed a threat as substitute Olga Kremleva showed when rattling a shot against Silke Rottenberg's right-hand post with the goalkeeper helpless.

Late consolation
Nonetheless, the Russian side failed to produce a concerted response and it was not until the dying seconds that they scored their consolation goal, with Morozova collecting a loose ball outside the area following a corner kick and lashing it in. Frankfurt will now meet the winner of the quarter-final tie between ASD CF Bardolino Verona and Br√łndby IF in the semi-finals next spring.
