Arsenal 3 Bardolino Verona 3
« on: October 16, 2007, 08:36:27 PM »
Arsenal Ladies survived a scare to draw 3-3 with Bardolino Verona and clinch top spot in their Uefa Women's Cup qualifying group.

The European champions had already booked their Quarter-Final place with convincing victories over Alma and Neulengbach. The Italian champions were expected to go the same way at Meadow Park but, instead, they gave as good as they got.

Julie Fleeting shrugged off a calf injury to take her place in Arsenal's starting line-up and opened the scoring after 27 minutes. Lianne Sanderson added a second three minutes after the break and Vic Akers' side looked virtually home and dry.

Bardolino had other ideas. Melania Gabbiadini reduced the deficit immediately after Sanderson's strike and Raffaella Manieri levelled matters just before the hour mark.

Arsenal regrouped and Kelly Smith restored their advantage five minutes from the end but Bardolino refused to give up and Manieri equalised for the second time with a goal in stoppage time.

Last season the defending was unbelievably good for us, like 11 out of 10.
