Aussie into World Cup final
« on: September 29, 2007, 07:14:01 PM »
Australian referee Tammy Ogston will take charge of the Women's World Cup decider in an historic appointment for football in her country.

Ogston, 37, will become the first Australian to control a FIFA World Cup final after she was handed duties for Sunday's decider between Brazil and Germany.

The Brisbane-based referee has already been in action in the tournament having officiated in the opening game between Germany and Argentina, as well as the group stage match between Korea DPR and Nigeria and the quarter final between Germany and Korea DPR.

She has also refereed at the 1999 and 2003 editions of the tournament.

Isabel Tovar and Rita Munoz, both from Mexico, will be the assistants.

Meanwhile, the Matildas have been short listed by as one of 10 teams in the running to be voted 'Most Entertaining Team'.

And Matildas Lisa De Vanna's spectacular strike against Norway and Heather Garriock's goal against Ghana are two of 10 goals in the running for the website's 'Goal of the Tournament' award.

De Vanna is also one of 11 players shortlisted by the FIFA Technical Study Group in contention to win the Golden Ball for best player at the tournament.
