2008 Umbro Football Tournament News


Advanced Notice for Any Ladies Football Clubs interested in playing in the 2008 Umbro Football Tournament in Manchester.

The Umbro International Women’s Cup is becoming more popular year on year, attracting better quality teams and is regarded as the premier 11-a-side women’s football competition in the UK, outside of the Women’s FA Cup.

This year saw another successful Umbro International Cup with the highest ever number of female competing teams, including teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Estonia, Canada and the USA. The wet weather failed to dampen the spirit of the players, officials and watching spectators who witnessed yet again another extremely high standard of football throughout the tournament. The Women’s Open Age competition is divided into four leagues – Elite, Elite 2, Senior and Recreational. Within each League there is a Trophy and a Plate competition; each match is 20 minutes each way.

Details of all the results and superb action photographs that highlight the fantastic atmosphere at the event can also be found on the main website at www.umbrocup.com. The Women’s Open Age website is currently under construction but should be available by mid September.

The 2008 event will take place at Manchester University Sports Fields at Wythenshawe which is a brand new venue for the Women’s Open Age competition. It has 27 quality grass pitches located on one site, a £2million Pavilion that opened in 2006, on site catering, Sports Injury Clinic and St John Ambulance First Aid Staff. There is easy access to the site from the M60 motorway and it is just 15 minutes from the accommodation and Manchester City Centre.

The dates for 2008 Tournament are as follows:

2008 Women's Open Age Weekend Tournament will be held on the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July 2008 - 80 teams will compete in 4 competitions Elite Teams, Senior Teams and Recreational Teams

2008 Mini Soccer Tournament will take place on Sunday 27th July - The one day tournament will see 24 teams competing in 2 competitions - Girls U12 born after 31st August 1995 and Girls U10 born after 31st August 1997

2008 Boys & Girls Youth Tournament will be held from Wednesday 30th July until Saturday 2nd August - 24 teams will compete in 2 competitions - Class I Girls born after 31st August 1993 and Class J Girls born after 31st August 1990

Teams are now beginning to enter for next year. As the event is extremely popular with teams returning year after year so early entry is strongly advised! Final prices are now being confirmed for next year but teams should confirm their interest through the www.umbrocup.com website.

So can any team enter regardless of which league they're in?

Its a brilliant pre season tournament, if your team wanted to play in it i suggest you enter early to make sure you get your place.
