SHANGHAI, China (CP) — Canadian head coach Even Pellerud has been suspended from Canada's first game against Norway at the women's World Cup of soccer which begins next week in China.

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, announced the suspension Monday. The punishment stems from Pellerud's ejection from the Gold Cup final against the United States last November in Carson City, Calif. The Gold Cup was a qualifying tournament for the World Cup.

Pellerud was thrown out of the game in the 86th minute after arguing a call. Canada lost the match 2-1 on a controversial penalty kick in the 30th minute of overtime.

Canada, ranked No. 9 in the world, opens Group C play at the World Cup against No. 4 Norway on Sept. 12 at Hangzhou. Canada then plays No. 47 Ghana on Sept. 15 and Australia, ranked No. 15, Sept. 19 in Chengdu.

The top two teams from each group advance to the next round.

Two other players have also been suspended from their opening matches. Argentina's Catalina Perez and Brazil's Elaine were both disciplined for receiving red cards in a match against each other on Nov. 26, 2006.
