Matildas give World Cup hosts a shock
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:11:12 AM »
Australia's women's soccer team has surprised World Cup hosts China 3-2 in one of their final lead-up matches to the tournament next month.

The Matildas scored a dramatic win in Tianjin overnight against the world No.11 - striker Sarah Walsh scoring seven minutes from fulltime to secure the win.

It is only the fourth time in 28 meetings Australia has beaten China, which has traditionally been one of the strongest teams in women's football.

Australia was also without several experienced players, including skipper Cheryl Salisbury.

The Matildas play China again on Sunday in Tianjin, before the squad go into a five-day camp in Sydney ahead of their Women's World Cup opener against Ghana on September 12 in Hangzhou.
