England v Wales
A Women’s U17 International
12.30pm, Monday 28 October 2013
New Bucks Head Stadium, AFC Telford United

Lois Fidler has lined up a match against Wales as she continues to prepare her England side for the U17 Euros.

The tournament will be held in the Midlands in November and December to help mark the end of The FA’s 150th year. It is the first time this European Championship has been staged outside of Switzerland.

The Young Lions were beaten by a strong USA side in August, just a month after competing in the Nordic Tournament in Iceland.

Fidler will be using this match to help finalise her plans for the Euro Finals.

She said: “It’s always exciting when you come up against a Home Nation and I think Wales will give us a good test just a few weeks out from the tournament.

“It gives the players another chance to impress and familiarise themselves with international football before the real business gets under way.”

The draw for the Finals will take place in Burton on Thursday 24 October. Eight teams will be drawn into two groups of four.

The two finalists and the winners of the third-place play-off will qualify for next summer’s U17 World Cup in Costa Rica.

England 5-0 Wales
A Women’s U17 International
12.30pm, Monday 28 October 2013
New Bucks Head Stadium, AFC Telford United

Lois Fidler's England Women's U17 team returned to winning ways in emphatic style after putting five goals past Wales at AFC Telford's New Bucks Head Stadium.

With a place at next month's UEFA Championship Finals secured by virtue of their status as hosts, England were in a confident mood on Monday and had effectively ended the tie as a contest inside the opening half an hour.

England's lost 6-0 in their last outing, at the hands of USA, but memories of that defeat were forgetten quickly as Chloe Kelly broke the deadlock within 120 seconds, guiding the ball into the bottom corner with a neat finish.

Wales goalkeeper Charlotte Edmunds was left picking the ball out of her net once more just 14 minutes later as Sarah Mayling made the most of good work from captain Leah Williamson and Evie Clarke to double the hosts' advantage.

England dominated possession, pinning the visitors back into their own half, with Williamson impressing with her varied range of passing.

And it was no surprise when England netted again after 27 minutes as Williamson rose perfectly to meet Mayling's flighted corner-kick and head the ball beyond Edmunds.

It could have been four shortly after the restart, but winger Clarke saw her effort land inches wide of the post following a glorious team move that had started at the feet of goalkeeper Kirstie Levell.

A fourth did arrive soon after, however, with Jenna Legg converting from the penalty spot after she was felled inside the box.

England weren't finished though, and Williamson grabbed her second of the match with another header in the closing stages.

England
Levell (Rogers, 60), Hassall (Cowley, 60), George, Williamson (C), Purfield (Lloyd, 60), Rouse (Primus, 60), Legg, Mayling, Clarke (Wilkinson, 70), Plumptre, Kelly.
Substitutes not used Williams, Stamp, Porter, Hartley.

Wales
Edmunds, Ridings, Pentney (Stevens, 18), Dodge (C) (Tinman, 57) (Evans, 65), Fuller, Nolan, Estcourt, Pritchard, Mitchell, Davies, Hosford.
Substitutes not used Roberts, Jones, Rogers.

Attendance 187

England kick-off the tournament against Italy at New Bucks Head, home of AFC Telford United on Tuesday 26 November. They then entertain Austria at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium on Friday 29 November before completing the group stage against Portugal at Burton Albion on Monday 2 December.

Consistent as always, is our Lois, play everyone out of position in an inflexible formation and they lose. Of course theyll all be in for a major rollocking now, never her fault.

Not having seen many of these U17s play and going on what raefil says, is this something that Fidler seems to do a lot? What's the reasons and thoughts behind why she does this? Never seen her work/coach, any good?

England coaches like to move players from their normal club position, at a young age it is useful to be learn to play in multiple positions.
She has had  some good result in the past WC 2008 for example.

:D Are you seriously suggesting that a European final's in is the place to experiment?
Went yesterday and the two Centre backs played very well in all fairness to them Arsenal and Man U I think but why oh why is the most creative player in the squad and probably the most threating holding midfield?! (Stop stifling creativity!)

Struck me that the setup was for a point when all 3 were there for the taking if England wanted them. Just have to say that all the partners involved in organising a fantastic atmosphere and setup at AFC Telford yesterday should be proud. Over 2,000 in attendance and the FA fanzone was packed at times- Well done to the FA for organising a great event.

Think at the age and stage in their development a final position should be nailed down at this time, would vary positions until around 14-15 but then needs to settle on one and specify roles and learn.

If we are not nailed down for a European finals and the opportunity to qualify for a World cup when will we be?
