Drew Carey takes on U.S. Soccer elite for charity event
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:21:12 AM »
Well known comedian and television star Drew Carey is combining his love of  soccer, Xbox 360 gaming and helping a good cause by taking on 5 of the best soccer players from both the men's and women's U.S. National teams in the Xbox 360 version of EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 07 to raise money for the Mooch Myernick Memorial Fund.

On Tuesday, June 5th, Carey will put up $100,000 of his own money as he faces off against Los Angeles Galaxy striker Landon Donovan (USA's second all-time leading scorer, the all-time leader in assists and the two-time U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year), Four-time World Cup veteran Kasey Keller, U.S. Women's National Team striker Abby Wambach (70 goals in 91 games for the United States),  New England Revolution forward and 2005 Major League Soccer MVP Taylor Twellman and U.S. Women's goalkeeper Hope Solo in the VIP invite-only event at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. For every game of FIFA Soccer 07 he loses, Carey will be throwing in $10,000 to benefit the Mooch Myernick Memorial Fund in honor of former coach and U.S. captain Glenn 'Mooch' Myernick. This will be capped off by the main event in which Carey will face “self-described EA  Sports king” Landon Donovan in a $50,000 match.

Hosted by ESPN soccer talent Allen Hopkins, the event will include a live auction in which guests can bid to take on Drew in their own EA-FIFA 07 challenge, as well as a raffle where guests can choose between 'Drew' tickets and 'U.S. Soccer' tickets. After every game, a ticket will be drawn from the winner's pot for a chance to win gift packs that will include: signed jerseys from all the participating U.S. Soccer players, an autographed football from San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, a signed jersey from Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney, an autographed game jersey from Memphis Grizzlies forward Paul Gasol, two EA SPORTS Xbox 360 game libraries that includes FIFA Soccer 07, Fight Night Round 3, NHL 07, NBA LIVE 07, Need For Speed Carbon, NCAA March Madness 07, Madden NFL 07 and NCAA Football 07, three nights accommodation at a Doubletree Hotel, and more. Soccer fans from all over the world will even have a chance to bid on an Xbox 360 Elite signed by Drew and the U.S. Soccer participants, which will be on eBay starting June 6th.

100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Mooch Myernick Memorial Fund, in honor of former coach and MNT captain Glenn 'Mooch' Myernick. The fund was established to help increase the number of children playing the sport in metropolitan communities nationwide, and to assist soccer clubs and organizations in urban areas to create and sustain soccer opportunities for local underserved children. Since the Fund was created, the Foundation has raised over $106,000 from individual and corporate donors in Myernick's honor to help support the growth of soccer in major metropolitan areas across the country. An assistant coach for the USA in the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup, Myernick was universally admired, respected and loved by all those whose lives he touched. He passed away in October of 2006 at the age of 51.
