Taylor aims to floor Italians
« on: May 30, 2007, 09:13:45 AM »
KATIE TAYLOR swaps her boxing gloves for football boots tonight when she lines out for the Republic of Ireland women's team against Italy in a UEFA Championship qualifier, WRITES STEPHEN FINN.

The 20-year-old Bray native has conquered the world in the boxing ring - winning two European Championships and one World title in her illustrious amateur career.

But the ring will be the furthest thing from her mind when she lines out for Noel King's Irish side at Belfield (7.45) in an intriguing qualifier.

Taylor was one of the Irish heroes with a stunning goal - her first at senior level for her country - to get Ireland off to a winning start against Hungary earlier this year.

If the Irish can beat the Italians it would put them in with a great chance of qualifying for the finals in Finland in two years' time.

"We're very confident after that excellent win against Hungary. We're going into the game to win it and if we do that we're in a great position in the table," said Taylor.

"If we can win all our home games and pick up some away points it'll put us in great shape."
