LADIES TRIUMPH
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:54:53 AM »
Arsene Wenger has known for weeks that his season will end without a trophy, but for Vic Akers, the Arsenal kit-man, the silverware keeps coming. Akers’s Arsenal Ladies team, whom he created in 1987, have been crowned champions of Europe to add to their league title and League Cup successes. The FA Cup is up next.

Arsenal became the first English club to lift the Uefa Women’s Cup, getting the better of Umea IK, the Swedish team, over two legs. Umea, ranked No 1 in Europe, were the better team, but Arsenal hung on for a goalless draw at their Boreham Wood base to take the cup after winning the first leg 1-0 in Sweden.

Akers said: “What a fantastic year it has been and for it to be our 20th anniversary makes it even more special. Arsãne is delighted and I’ve just got a text from the boys.”
