Arsenal hang on for Uefa triumph
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:54:01 AM »
Arsenal celebrated their 20th anniversary on Saturday by becoming the first British club to win the Uefa Women's Cup. "It's the greatest moment in our history," said the manager, Vic Akers, after seeing his team complete an aggregate 1-0 victory over the Swedish champions, Umea IK, in a testing second leg which ended goalless.

The previous weekend a late goal by the England right-back Alex Scott had capped a courageous first-leg performance in Sweden, but in front of a 3,467 crowd at Borehamwood FC's Meadow Park on Saturday, the Gunners became increasingly nervous as the twice-winners of the competition piled on the pressure in the closing stages. They hit the woodwork twice and Emma Byrne, the Arsenal goalkeeper, had to be at her best to deny the substitute Ramona Bachmann in the dying stages.

"It was very difficult to hang on with people getting tense but we put in a massive amount of effort throughout the tie and we got our rewards," said Akers. "We've been in the competition five times in the last six years and our record is outstanding, but this was our first final and the win will be a massive boost for the English women's game."

"I felt we were the better side and we could have won both games," said Umea's coach, Andree Jeglertz, "but Arsenal stopped our best players in a marvellous way in each game and they have won the cup - so they are the best team in Europe."

Arsenal's victory celebrations continued at the Emirates Stadium yesterday, when the Uefa trophy was shown off during the interval of the club's Premiership match with Fulham. The women Gunners can achieve something that Arsène Wenger's team can only dream about. Having won the Premier League and League Cup, a victory over Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup final on Monday will complete an unprecedented quadruple of trophy triumphs.,,2068423,00.html
