SheBelieves Cup '17
« on: February 26, 2017, 09:10:55 AM »
It's back for a second year:

Wed 1 March - UK times
England v France (9pm)
USA v Germany (midnight)
Talen Energy Stadium, Chester, Pennsylvania

Sat 4th
France v Germany (7.15pm)
USA v England (10pm)
Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey

Tues 7th
Germany v England (9pm)
USA v France (midnight)
Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, Washington, D.C.

Exactly the kind of test you want when things are looking a bit dodgy  :-\

The England contingent includes Casey Stoney after her injury, while Megan Rapinoe is injured and missing from the American squad. Germany are without Potsdam forward Svenja Huth and defensive midfielder Tabea Kemme, but they should be a tough proposition going into the tournament. France will welcome back Lyon's Élodie Thomis and Portland's Amandine Henry.

There's been no word on UK TV coverage. Some of the games might be available via the other countries' broadcasters - watch this space.

Quote
ENGLAND SQUAD for She Believes Cup:

Goalkeepers: Karen Bardsley (Manchester City), Siobhan Chamberlain (Liverpool), Mary Earps (Reading).

Defenders: Laura Bassett (Notts County), Millie Bright (Chelsea), Lucy Bronze (Manchester City), Rachel Daly (Houston Dash), Steph Houghton (Manchester City), Jo Potter (Notts County), Alex Scott (Arsenal), Casey Stoney (Liverpool), Demi Stokes (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Isobel Christiansen (Manchester City), Jade Moore (Notts County), Jordan Nobbs (Arsenal), Jill Scott (Manchester City), Fara Williams (Arsenal)

Forwards: Karen Carney (Chelsea), Toni Duggan (Manchester City), Nikita Parris (Manchester City), Jodie Taylor (Arsenal), Rachel Williams (Notts County), Ellen White (Birmingham City).

What is SheBelieves?

Conceived and developed by the U.S. Women’s National Team players, SheBelieves is a movement to inspire young girls and women and encourage them to accomplish their goals and dreams, athletic or otherwise. The campaign was originally launched in the run-up to the 2015 Women’s World Cup but has since evolved and grown into a special bond between the team and its fans, taking its powerful message of empowerment and that of believing in yourself into communities across the nation.

France-England game tonight is also confirmed for BBC red button, stream, and FATV Youtube in UK. Same for England's other two matches. Will they make it worth watching? ???

(edit) If that fails, the full game is also on The Beautiful Game for the time being.  (edit 2) iPlayer doesn't have the usual on-demand rights this time.

Er, yes, the BBC don't seem keen to let anyone watch that one. Alex Scott picked up a calf injury in the game, while Sampson was self-critical post-match.

Highlights of the other game played later that night:

Brief video of the other Saturday match... or you can watch the whole damn thing

Germany v France, 4 Mar 2017
highlights - www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgdUZzMvUrg

Who will win? Well, if this was a real high-stakes tournament, the group table would be very interesting. Going into the final games, England and USA (3 pts) trail France (4 pts). Goal difference and goals scored are the main tiebreakers. So, if England and the U.S. both win, it'll depend on who gets the best scoreline tonight.

Germany v England is tonight (Tuesday 9pm) on the BBC http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39107806

Then USA v France is at midnight, on some other channel maybe.

So the England Manager urges his players to make a name for themselves in Euro 2017. Sampson is quoted as saying"This is where you want to be, in big tournaments. This is where you make your name, we all remember when Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup in '66, when Gordon Banks made that save from Pele in '70 and David Beckham getting sent off against Argentine in '98. This is your moment to make memories and special things happen".

Special things:

Germany v England, 7 Mar 2017
highlights (UK) - www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39201740

USA v France, 7 Mar 2017
highlights - ussoccer.com/stories/2017/03/09/19/35/20170309-video-wnt-v-fra-highlights

So, if England and the U.S. both win...

Shows what I know!

So, what conclusions can we draw, if any? England are a match for the world champs but are doomed in the Euros? U.S. soccer in a downturn? France locked in to win in August?

and David Beckham getting sent off against Argentine in '98

He should've quoted some Shakespeare too :) I wish Sampson was less of a hypeman. 3rd in the World Cup was great, but he uses that "best result since 1966" thing, which just obscures things, as if women's football can't achieve on its own terms. Also, Beckham in '98 got about a million death threats, it's not something to aspire to.

Lets hope that Southgate takes a leaf out of Sampson's book and names his World Cup winning squad today......
