WWC 2019 qualifiers - the road to France
« on: January 18, 2017, 06:36:32 AM »
In qualifying for the 2019 Women's World Cup, 46 European countries have entered, one less than for the 2017 Euros.

The tournament is opening in April, with an increased preliminary round, to weed out the 'weakest' teams. This brings together 16 teams (up from 8 last time), and only 5 of them will progress. This round includes Turkey, Greece and Israel, so it should be pretty competitive. It'll be played in Albania, Georgia, Lithuania and the Faroes.

Two nations are entering for the first time:

Kosovo (competitive debut)
Andorra (World Cup debut)

In another change, the main UEFA qualifying groups have been reduced by one team each.

The five survivors from the prelims will join the other 30 teams, and they'll compete in 7 groups of 5 teams:

Qualifying group stage: 11th September 2017 to 4th September 2018
Playoffs: October/November 2018

* OK OK, "seeding" certain teams.
Takes all the fun out of it.
